Food

Australians love to celebrate.  Even if it’s just a small detail in their friends’ lives, as long as it is something positive and happy, it is always a good excuse to drink and eat.

So when they learned that I’m going for a 5-week vacation, my workmates organized a small, intimate dinner last Friday at BBQ City.  BBQ City is a well-known Korean barbeque restaurant in Liverpool Street, Sydney.  I’ve been to this restaurant lots of times before with Chris, our friends and my parents (when they visited Sydney in 2009).

The last time I had dinner here, I was also with my workmates and we loved the food a lot so we had my farewell dinner here too.

Whenever I dine here, I always start my meal with Kimchi Pancake.  This dish is very addicting and not too spicy.

As we savour the goodness of the Kimchi Pancake, we contemplate on the BBQ dishes we were about to order.

A Korean BBQ meal will never be complete without Soju. It is Korea’s distilled beverage likened to vodka with an average of 18.5 to 20% alcohol.  The taste is unloveable at first, but it grows in you.

Korean barbeque refers to the way Koreans grill their food, whether it’s pork, beef, chicken or seafood.  The food is grilled on the diner’s table.  The grill is built into the table or the restaurant provides portable stoves for customers to use.

In BBQ City, the minimum order of a BBQ plate is two orders.  Since there were five of us, we ordered 4 dishes to BBQ.

As soon as our BBQ dishes were ready, the staff served the Banchan which refers to the small dishes that accompanies our main Korean dishes.  My favorite of all the Banchan is the Cabbage Kimchi.

The BBQ dishes we ordered were the Beef and Pork Fillets (we chose these because it has less fat).

Then we also grilled Chicken Fillets and Marinated Octopus.

All barbeque dishes were delicious and tasty, especially when partnered with a range of Banchan and of course, shots of Soju.

Cheers to a safe and joyful adventure!!!!  Cheers to friendship!!!!

Today was my last day at work and I’m feeling a mix of happiness and relief.  Stepping away from my busy and sometimes crazy work at the office is something I really need to do right now.  My work means a lot to me and I have an attachment to what I do–a passion that sometimes takes so much of my attention and focus.   Work is one of the major reasons why I decided to push thru with our plan to visit our other home.  I felt that I need time off and just step away from it all or else I might burn out.

Went to work early today so I can leave early.  At 3:15pm, I said goodbye to my boss, my colleagues and friends at work.  And although I was glad I finished my tasks, meetings and handover today,  a part of me was a little bit sad, withdrawal syndrome I guess.

I felt the love of my teammates, it was overwhelming.  All of them wished me a happy and safe travel and profusely assured me that I deserve the long break.  I’m truly grateful to be working with an incredible team and to have them as friends is a big bonus.

This was where we had coffee on my birthday (I know right, it’s almost April now and I’m still not over my bday posts tsk tsk).  After lunch at Manly Beach, we went back to the city, window shopped and had afternoon tea at Le Pain Quotidien before we attended mass.

Le Pain Quotidien specializes in bread with only organic stone-ground flour, salt, and water, kneaded and shaped by hand and  baked in a hearth under the watchful eye of artisan bakers.

I’ve been eyeing this cafe for awhile because of the ambience–light and homey.

I took a lot of photos of this table.  I fell inlove with it and swore to the Husband that I will do anything just to have a table like this in our dream home.

I ordered my usual Cafe Americano and the Husband his Cafe Latte.

Since we are still full from our Yum Cha lunch, we shared a plate of assorted breads and we each had a boiled egg.

My favorite from all of the breads we ate where the sourdough bread.

I found out that they serve a lot of organic meals here so for those who love organic food, I suggest you check out this cafe and you might like it too.

I think my weekend started on the Thursday last week.  Thursday after work, the Husband and I went a little pasalubong shopping and then after dinner, I finished two batches of laundry.  We had a full weekend ahead of us so I thought I’d start on a bit of weekend chores.  On Friday night, I finished all laundry and got our home de-cluttered a bit.

Woke up early on Saturday and wrote my March article for “Ang Kalatas” then got ready and
attended my goddaughter Madie’s dedication day.  It was our first time to witness a dedication ceremony and it was lovely.  Being one of the godmothers, I had to read a “gift”.  The gift handed to me was the gift of teaching.

After lunch, we went home, rested a bit, got ready and we were out again.  This time, we attended the 50th birthday of one of my aunts.  Lots of food and happy faces.

The Husband and I didn’t have photos during the party because we were asked to cover the event.  Thank goodness for set up of a photobooth (by Photo Ops), we had a decent photo.  (For Sydneysiders, if you need a photobooth service, let me know and I’ll give you the contact details of Photo Ops).

Sunday we drove up to Brighton Le-Sands to witness my goddaughter Sophia’s christening.  It was a beautiful ceremony.  The priest gave an insightful homily on the responsibilities of parents and godparents to the children of God.

This was our third buffet for the weekend but it was great that each buffet had their “main attractions”.  Sunday’s lunch buffet’s attraction were the seafood and I loved the oysters best!

After all the festivities were over, we went back home to the reality of de-cluttering.  After all the three weeks of sorting out stuff, it’s not yet over (at least for me).  Sunday afternoon, I spent my time cleaning the fridge and pantry, looking at stuff that we need to get rid of, checking expiry dates and making sure that they are prioritized to be eaten.

It won’t be long now before our great vaycay.  As of today, the food inside our freezer and fridge are enough for us this week.  By next week, I’d only probably cook just two meals and if we get hungry, we’d probably buy take away.

We haven’t packed yet!  No, I’m not panicking yet.  I’ve got everything organized inside my head–on how I’ll go about packing.  Husband and I are still pre-occupied with work and all the photos we took for the past two weeks.  Don’t worry, we will make sure that we finish your photos (you know who you are) before we go on vaycay.

I hope your weekend was fun and great too!

Good morning!  I woke up at 6:45am even if my alarm was set at 8:30am.  I have a fun and busy day ahead of me but I decided to get up, log in and write my article for “Ang Kalatas“.  Our next issue will come out next weekend so I hope some of you will be able to get a copy.  If not, you can check our issues online.

Before I officially start my day, let me share with you the new Starbucks logo.  At the start of the year, Starbucks announced that their logo will have a new look.  I’ve seen a few online buddies of mine share photos of the new look but it was only last Wednesday that I saw it.

Looks very “minimalistic” to me.  No more frills, no more words needed.  When you see “the siren”, you’ll know it’s Starbucks.

Wishing you a great weekend.
