Food

We’ve been hanging out at different suburbs lately so we’ve missed our favourite Koreatown in Strathfield. We took a day-off last Friday and decided to have brunch there amidst the rains, wind and gloom. Such bad weather that it was tempting to just stay in bed and sleep. But our love for Korean stuff proved to be much stronger so as early as 10:30am we were already there hoping to find a place to eat.

We found a cafe and restaurant called “Beauty and the Beast” (39 The Boulevard, Strathfield NSW) that serves Korean, Japanese and Western food. They have a wide range of dishes from snacks, lunch, dinner and even happy hour. I’ve never been more glad to find that they serve Club Sandwiches. They’re my favourite snacks (think Tropical Hut Philippines) since I was a kid and it’s not commonly served in cafes here in Australia. The Husband and I ordered a Club Sandwich with Chips, Kimchi Stew with Pork and Tofu and Pork Katsu–one for each cuisine. The servings were big but we almost finished everything because we were so hungry. Enjoyed the food because it was simply delicious.
After brunch, we went to Hanaro Mart (Shop 16/11 The Boulevard Strathfield) to look at Korean goodies. We mostly bought chocolates, canned coffees and ice cream!
Dropped by Hello Happy and bought some bread. We love their bread so everytime we chance upon Hello Happy we buy a few to take home with us.

For a change, we didn’t have coffee and instead visited the newest yogurt place in Strathfield, Yogurberry. The store’s only a week-old and we even heard construction going on at the back but the place was ready to accommodate customers nonetheless. The weather was freezing cold and yet here we were enjoying a big cup of Taro Yogurt

Brunch, check. Korean goodies, check, Korean breads, check. A yogurt dessert, check. A short visit to Koreatown and we got what we came for and more. It was a great start to our long weekend.

Our teppanyaki dinner at Kobe Jones is one of the best gastronomic indulgences we’ve ever experienced. Dining the teppanyaki way is not new to us but experiencing it at Kobe Jones took us to a whole new level of teppanyaki goodness. Celebrating the birthday of one of my dearest friends here in Sydney made this a more memorable and enjoyable experience.

We started dinner by having drinks.  The Husband had Asahi Japanese Beer. Smooth and not as bitter as other beers.

While I tried there Japanese Mojito. A classic Mojito turned Japanese! Shiso ‘Japanese mint’ and fresh limes, muddled with white rum sugar and covered in crushed ice. Refreshing and cool to the taste.

We’ve been here twice…in one day.

Whenever we have dinner out, my ritual is to have coffee first so I make it a point to be out early so I’d have time before dinner happens.

We arrived an hour and half at North Strathfield and went straight to Cheeky Chocolate for some coffee and cakes. The feel of luxury and opulence filled me when I stepped inside their cafe. The place is adorned with beautiful chandeliers and velvet-cushioned sofas. It was dark and cozy and made me feel like we were in a 1920’s movie, it was very Moulin Rogue.

The dessert creations at Cheeky Chocolate were designed by the famous pastry chef Adriano Zumbo so my expectations were a bit high. Coming here turned out to be so worth it as the coffee was strong and well-made and the cakes tasted exquisite. We had Salted Caramel Macarons and Salted Dark Chocolate Mud Cake. Both rich and very indulgent. The Husband being a dark chocolate fiend loved this cake. It was a great fusion of bitter and salty inside the mouth.

A night out with friends will never be complete without dessert. So after dinner at The Bakehouse Garden we took our friends to Cheeky Chocolate for some tea and dessert.

Since we had a filling dinner, we only tried two cakes. The Chocolate Hazelnut Dome is to die for. It became an instant favourite of mine as it had the right amount of sweetness and nuttiness.

The Raspberry Meringue Tart is a balanced concoction of fruity, sweet and creamy. The meringue was soft but the raspberries provided that chewy texture.

This is one great dessert experience and we’ll definitely come back here again.

I’m slowly catching up with all my restaurant adventures so bear with me with all the food porn.

We conquered North Strathfield in Winter with friends. The Husband and I have unconsciously aimed to visit different suburbs, particularly those with Koreatowns because of our love for Korean Cuisine. We’ve been to the Koreatowns of Sydney, Chatswood, Strathfield and Eastwood. Whenever we learn of a place that has a good Korean restaurant, we bookmark them and plan to one day dine there. It didn’t take long before we found ourselves in the quiet neighborhood of North Strathfield.

The Bakehouse Garden is a Korean BBQ Restaurant located not too far away from North Strathfield train station. It’s been operating since 2006 and have been known for their delicious barbeque meats. The staff were all warm and accommodating. We arrived with no reservations (only because we knew that we will arrive early) and they seated us at a more private area of the restaurant.

We ordered a variety of meats to barbeque: chicken, pork and beef. A plate of meat is good for two persons so take note when ordering for a group. Some Korean BBQ restaurants have big servings but The Bakehouse Garden is more of a minimalist. The meats didn’t disappoint as all were good quality, tasty and juicy.

They gave two sets of Banchan Dishes (side dishes) for our group of six.

To give us more warmth, we ordered a bowl of Galbitang (beef short rib soup) and Sundubu-jjigae (spicy soft tofu stew). Both were delicious and comforting.

We are currently loving the macarons and chocolate cake at Via Del Corso. Whenever we find ourselves hanging out at Westfield Sydney food court, we find ourselves having coffee at Via Del Corso. They make good coffee and have a variety of cakes, macarons and handmade chocolates.

Their Chocolate Cake is very rich and moist. According to the Husband, this cake is very  similar to Red Ribbon‘s chocolate cake (Red Ribbon is a famous Filipino cake shop and restaurant in the Philippines) so this one’s a truly winner for us.

I love their macarons especially the Salted Caramel and Peanut Butter macarons.  I swear by this, if you chance upon Via Del Corso macarons, try them and you’ll really enjoy it.
