The Married Life

I have always shared my “Me” times and I’ve always been grateful for having a partner who gives me the space I need on a regular basis.

Since I’m a strong believer of “Me” times, I encourage and let my Husband have his “Me” time too.

latte love

I mentioned before that the Husband and I seldom take our day-off (Note: In Australia, some companies give employees an extra day off work that you can take any day of the work week) together.  Not that we don’t want to spend extra time with each other but because we want to give each other the space to spend the day however each of us want.

Sometimes we’d joke and say, “Yay! I have the house to myself while you’re at the office!”  While we love hanging out together, I think it’s healthy whenever we’d say that joke to each other.  When the Husband’s on a day-off, I love it when the day is about to end, he’d call me at the office and ask, “What time are you going home?”.   I feel my heart go a bit tender knowing that deep inside he misses me.

On days when he felt like going to the mall and do grocery by himself, I let him.  Shopping for grocery may only be his little excuse because he probably just wants to check out the latest gadgets in the shops by himself so he can have more time to play with them.  This kind of “Me” time is truly a big help to me.  Imagine, skipping doing grocery once in a while?  Not only do I have more time to do other stuff I want to do, he also becomes more of an expert when it comes to doing grocery shopping.

Thursday night is shopping night in Sydney.  Shops in the city close at 9:00pm and that’s everyone’s opportunity after work.  When I’m feeling tired, I’d go home and let the Husband do his own shopping.  He’d normally walk around the shops for an hour before going home.  He appreciates this time because it helps take off the stress he’s had at work.

Some Friday nights we’d have separate drinks-after-work parties with our workmates.  I never join him with his friends from work because that’s when I grab the opportunity to be with my workmates, too.  After an hour of two with our mates, we’d rejoin for a late dinner date and share stories of how our week at work had been.  This may not be an exclusive “Me” time but I believe going out separately with friends is healthy for both of us.

Everyday at night, he spends a few minutes in our balcony before going to bed.  He enjoys looking out the streets below us and the quiet that comes with it.  It’s his time to reflect on what happened that day and thinks about the things he look forward to tomorrow.

Those are just a few of his “Me” times.  Most of it are just a short time for him to relax and de-stress.  Quick, fleeting moments, but nevertheless, important in his daily life because it makes him happier and healthier.

It’s Monday once again and for most of us, it also means back to the daily grind of tasks and responsibilities.  So how are you feeling this morning?  I know that the usual feelings on Mondays are denial, sleepiness, crankiness and laziness (anything else?).  I sometimes have a variation of all these emotions every Monday morning but I try to snap out of it as quick as I can because I want to arrive to work cheerful and ready to be productive.

I catch the train every morning to work and during my 45-minute transit I try to come up with some mental exercises to wake my brain up and bring out the positivity in my spirit.  Every morning,  I always think about the happy things that make me feel blessed.

For this morning, my list consisted of The Sweetest Things that I have shared in Instagram before. My Instagram account (follow me at @ibyang if you have an account and let’s share photographs!) has been a repository of random photographs that immortalize special moments of my life.  It’s an easy, user-friendly iPhone app that instead of just sharing minute details here in AWCL, I just upload a photo in instagram and voila!  I get to share a significant part of my life in a split second.

Moving on, here are some Instagram photos that immortalized some of The Sweetest Things that made my heart warm and tender.

One of my BFFs in the Philippines gifted me with these cute grooming set and a Rizal mug.  According to her, she immediately thought of me when she saw this Korean/Japanese-looking grooming set because she knows I love anything Korean.  It was also very timely that she gave me this because I was on the lookout for a grooming set that I could always bring whenever I travel.  This grooming set is now part of my travel make-up bag.

The Sweetest Things

She gave me this Rizal mug years ago since she also knows I’m a Rizal fan.  This mug not only reminds me of my love for Rizal but most importantly, this reminds me how much my BFF and I love coffee.

The Sweetest Things

One of my College BFFs is another person who knows me so well and always seem to give me the cutest, useful things.  This year, she gave me a pair of winter slippers with heart designs (she knows I love the heart symbol).

The Sweetest Things

And this winter season, she gave us the biggest surprise by knitting beanies for us.  Yes, she not only knitted a beanie for me but for the rest of our gang.  So sweet of her and the beanies are sooo cute and colourful!

The Sweetest Things

The Husband’s high school friend whom we got to spend time with in April when we were in Manila gave us these lovable His and Her key chains.  The lips of the boy and girl key chain are magnetic so everytime they get close, they “kiss”.

The Sweetest Things

I got to spend time with my youngest cousin two weeks ago and during dinner at their place, he hugged and kissed me all of a sudden.  I asked, “What was that for?”.  He replied, “Nothing, I just want to.”  Awwwww.  That was simply a precious moment.  I’m glad that even if he has grown up to be a big boy now, he never forgets to make “lambing” (be sweet).  No matter old he gets, in my heart, he will always be my baby cousin.

The Sweetest Things

My High School Barkada (friends) have our own facebook page and that’s where we get to plan our get-together(s).  A few of us are living abroad now but thru our page, we get to update each other with statuses and photographs.  Last week, a few of them decided to have dinner on Friday night and all was planned thru comments in facebook.  One of our friends also tweeted about it so when I saw the tweet, I messaged back and told them that I will call them during dinner…and I did.  It was lovely to hear their voices.  It was a comfort and joy to know that even if we’re miles apart, there are no walls and awkwardness.  The minute we heard each others’ voices on the line, we picked up where we left off and it was instant fun and laughter.  Below is a photo of my coffee date with them before I left Manila.

The Sweetest Things

It’s always a treat when there’s cake at home and it’s always wonderful when the Husband makes the effort of baking it.  On Saturday night, he baked my favourite Vanilla Cake enveloped in Buttercream Icing and topped with Pink and White Sprinkles.  Not only does the thought of having a Husband that bakes my favourite cake makes me feel loved, I’m happy that I get to bring a slice of his cake with me to work, to enjoy during my Monday morning tea.

The Sweetest Things

Wishing you all a week filled with sweet moments!  Happy Monday!
I usually have a once-a-month major grocery shopping and on a fortnightly basis for replenshing raw produce .  Our usual stops would be at the nearby Woolworths (an Australian supermarket) and at the Asian market.

The Asian market is complete with raw produce, from vegetables, seafood and meat, and dry products exported from Asian countries.  If you follow me via twitter and instagram (follow @ibyang in instagram if you want), you may have probably seen photographs of Filipino food that my Husband and I sometimes indulge in.  It is in this Asian market that we get our Filipino food fix.

When I shop for raw produce at the Asian market, I buy in bulk so I can prepare, marinate and store them in bulk too.  This is part of organizing and preparing the food that I will cook for the household in the coming weeks.  I store the raw produce we bought in plastic containers and label them so it’s easier for me to figure out what to cook on a daily or weekly basis.

Food Preps

I buy a big slab of beef (1-2 kilos) and cut it to different cuts: cubes, strips, for steak.  My choice of beef varies so we try different parts from time to time.  So far, I’ve tried silverside, topside, rump and scotch fillet.  It’s usual that markets already cut the beef for you but I don’t really mind cutting the beef myself.  With a 1-2 kilo slab of beef, I get to maximize the meat we bought.  I make my own marinades for Bulgogi and Steaks.

Food Preps

I also do a bit of cutting of chicken for my food preps, too.  My usual chicken marinades are Garlic Salt, Soy Sauce and Lemon and BBQ.

For Seafood, I ask the market to clean the fishes for me but before storing them, I still clean them the second time around.  I also take out the fish scales also.  For squids, I clean them myself.  I usually lather some salt or garlic salt to the fishes before I store them inside the freezer.

Food preps

On weekends, I’m most busy in the kitchen as it is during this time that I make time to do some bulk preparations.

One of the things that my friends in Manila asked me when I was there in April was “Do you really cook the food we see in your blog?”  And the answer to that has always been, “Unless stated that I bought it, yes!”.  When I was single and lived in the Philippines, I never really talked about cooking much so it was a bit of a surprise for even my closest friends to see photos of food in my blog and in facebook.  But the truth is, I’ve always had a love for food and I’ve always loved eating.  Only it has been magnified now with the gift of technology and social networking.

Not only do I love to eat food, I also truly love preparing and cooking food.  It’s tedious and may be time consuming to some but I find comfort and grateful that I know that what I put on the table for our family is something healthy and created with love.

There’s something about traveling together that makes us (my Husband and I) closer to each other that after we traveled, we missed being away from each other.  After our Manila & Seoul vacation, it took us almost four weeks to spend a whole day out together.

It’s very rare that we in sync our day/s off work because we usually allot that for our respective “me” times.  However, for our first day off work after vacation, we decided to align our schedules together and spend the whole day traipsing around the city.  Although we enjoyed our vaycay immensely, we found that we missed the laidback atmostphere and familiarity that Sydney brings.

Our date started with a late lunch at our newest Korean resto find (coming soon in the next entry) and then we just wasted time hanging out in the shops at Pitt Street.  A walk along George Street led us to the Apple Store where we just played with their devices and looked at gadget accessories.  We were on our way to Circular Quay for the Vivid Sydney when tea time came and it was fortunate that we were near Lindt Cafe

It was the first week of Winter and there were signs that they are offering their Winter Exclusive–the Hazelnut Hot Chocolate.

Lindt Cafe (June 2011)

I was looking forward to having coffee but when I saw their Winter Special, I immediately changed my mind and ordered the Hazelnut Hot Chocolate instead.

Chocolate with almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts or toffee nuts are a favourite of mine so I had to take advantage as Winter is only three months.

The limited edition Hazelnut Hot Chocolate is only available at the Lindt Cafe.  It combines the richness and earthy aromas of roasted hazelnuts and Lindt‘s dark or milk chocolate, with added honey and caramel for a perfect blend.

I smelled it from a few meters away as the waiter walks out of the counter to serve our drinks.  I was in hazelnut heaven from the first sip thereon.  The flavour of hazelnut was abundant and rich.  Truly perfect for chilly-snugly days.

Lindt Cafe (June 2011)

The Husband opted for his usual favourite: Cafe Mocha (Dark Chocolate was his preference for the chocolate).

Lindt Cafe (June 2011)

We shared a slice of their Wimbledon, a layered cake of mascapone and vanilla bean cream, almond vanilla cake, strawberry puree, bordered by shards of red and white chocolate.

We’ve go two more months of the Winter Season so if ever you are near a Lindt Cafe, drop by and warm up with a cup of the Hazelnut Hot Chocolate

This week, I start sharing our Seoul adventures to you but before I blabber on, let me answer a few questions sent to me via FB and twitter:

Is it cheaper to fly to South Korea via Manila or Sydney? Based from our calculations, it was cheaper for us to travel from Manila to Korea.  So what we did was booked our plane tickets via Cebu Pacific and fly from Manila instead of stopping over in Korea to and from Sydney. Our flights and accommodation were all booked online and were settled even before we were in Manila.

Do Filipino citizens in Australia need to apply for a Korean tourist visa?  Yes.  My Husband still holds a Filipino passport so he had to apply for a visa.  He was asked to present a show money of AUD$5,000.00, our flight itinerary and accommodation bookings.  Before you do anything, please call the South Korea Consulate General (+61-2-9210-0200 – Sydney; +61-2-627041000 – Canberra) to confirm what you need to do. Visa or denial of visa is granted after 5 working days.

Why Seoul?  Part of our travel plan everytime we go overseas is to grab the chance to explore an Asian city.  The last time we were in the Philippines, we went to Hongkong.  When I picked up my Husband in Dubai, we had a quick stopover in Singapore.  When we planned our Manila vacation, there were three cities we thought of exploring: Singapore (again), Tokyo or Seoul.  The choice to go to Seoul won because (1) it was a chance to have a break from Manila’s heat–April is Springtime in Seoul and it would be lovely to see some Cherry Blossoms; (2) We love Koreanovelas!!!  And one of the reasons why we love watching them is because of their lovely scenery and (3) exploring Seoul seemed cheaper compared to going to Singapore or Tokyo.  All these three major reasons for choosing Seoul proved to be a good decision.

We took the red eye flight on a Monday morning.  We left Manila at 1:15AM and touched down at Incheon International Airport at 5:45AM.  We liked taking the red eye flight because it meant we will arrive in South Korea in the morning and we’ll have time to rest and be able to explore the city right away.

I slept soundly during the flight and only woke up because the pilot announced that we will touch down soon. When the Husband opened the window, Korea’s sunrise greeted us a good morning.

It was 6 degrees when we arrived, a chilly morning in Incheon.

We had to ride a small train which transferred us to the Arrivals area of the airport.

This escalator machine talks but I only heard Korean words.  Maybe there was an English translation but I didn’t have time to listen.

Their airport is massive.  They say an airport is a reflection of a country, in this case, it is true.  This country is all about wide and high spaces–much like their airport.  It takes a lot of walking to get from Point A to Point B, hence, the help of walkalators.

Their walkalators have these signs.  If you incidentally step on the left side, the walkalator will make a loud noise, telling you that you are at the wrong side.

This writing table used by passengers for filling in their travel forms amazed us.  Other than pens, they have reading glasses available for passengers to use.  What’s more amazing is that there are three reading glasses with three different grades.  So cool!

Lining up at the immigration took awhile.  But passing by the Customs was a breeze.  We had a quick side trip to their foreign exchange centre before going out of the Arrivals section.

And then we were out!  And finally we saw this part of the Incheon International Airport, a place we’ve seen in numerous Koreanovelas.  My Husband and I were laughing like crazy when we realized that we are finally in South Korea and we felt like we are living a koreanovela we’ve seen on TV (yes, we are lame like that haha, it doesn’t take much to make us happy).  I kept on saying, “Oh my God, we are here!”.

They have gardens in the middle of the Arrivals area.

First order of the day was to find a way out of the airport.  We checked out the electronic map and the Information Centre.

The electronic map seemed user-friendly enough.  The ladies in the Information Centre can speak English.

As we walked towards where we’ll buy bus tickets, we passed by this counter where you can rent phones.  In Korea, there are no pre-paid phones (only post-paid) so if you really need a phone, you need rent them out.  My Husband and I didn’t rent a phone because we learned that most areas in Seoul have WIFI. We got in touch with our loved ones via FB or twitter while we were there.

There are three ways to get out of Incheon Airport: Bus, Taxi or Train.  We decided to take the Limousine Bus which won’t involve too many stops and will drop us right infront of our hotel.  There is an “ordinary” bus which is cheaper but will involve more stops.  Taking the train will involve a lot of moving from one platform to another or worse, getting on a bus too.

The Limousine Bus costs 15,000 won (about U$15.00) per head.

The cost is worth it because the seats are likened to a business class seat in an airplane.  The seat has reclining functions and made it comfortable to sit back and sleep.

The ride going to Seoul took more than an hour because we were on the road during morning rush hour (about 7ish in the morning).  Photo below indicates the right side lane has slow moving traffic.  Those vehicles stuck in slow moving traffic are on their way to Seoul.

However, seeing Cherry Blossoms outside our window made up for that.  We were surprised to see the city enveloped in blooming Cherry Blossoms.  We thought we were too late.  We were told that Cherry Blossoms usually bloom on the 2nd week of April and only lasts for a few days.  We arrived on the 3rd week of April and thank God, there were still lots of Cherry Blossoms.

Our first day in Seoul was cold and drizzly.  The weather was gloomy but when we saw this sign that said….

…my Husband and I were both smiling, feeling a certain warmth.  We have arrived, finally.  An unexpected dream has come true.
