Health and Well-being

I get my fruit fixes for the day by eating fruits during morning and afternoon tea. Sometimes, I make fruits my appetizers before my main course for lunch and dinner. Or make them my after dinner snack.

For my morning tea at work, I bring fruits in small containers. I slice them in small pieces the night before and keep them in the fridge together with my lunch box.

I have a foldable, re-usable fork (got them from instant cup noodles) that I use so I don’t have to pick the fruits with my fingers.
The fruits I bring to work are usually watermelon, green apple, kiwi and grapes.
On days I wasn’t able to prepare a fruit box, I buy bananas or strawberries on the way to work. Good thing we have a fruit shop a few doors ways from my office.
In the afternoons, I usually just have a warm lemonade or calamansi juice with honey when I arrive home. Aside from being a soothing drink for the throat, I also get my dose of vitamin C from it.
How do you get your fruit fix for the day?
My weekend started on Thursday afternoon at Starbucks. After work, Jeanny and I had a gym and sauna bonding at her apartment. I waited for Jeanny at a Starbucks near her office and that’s where I wrote down all the things that my Husband and I need to accomplish for the weekend. I had to make a list because there’s a lot of things to do other than our usual weekend household chores. I also took this chance to call my friend Michelle regarding Hilda’s hen’s night party in April as I’m helping her with some of the preps. After talking to Michelle, I called Hilda, this time to talk about her wedding invites which Chris and I will be creating.

After my gym and sauna bonding with Jeanny, Chris arrived at her apartment and joined us for dinner. As usual, Jeanny came up with another yummy pasta dish (thanks Jeanny!).

The following morning, Chris accompanied me to see our doctor for my ultrasound. The doctor needed to see if I was healing well from the inside (due to my surgery last December 2009). We were so relieved and happy when our doctor said I’m all good and healthy and it’s as if no surgery happened inside my body. Thank you God!

Watched “Alice in Wonderland” after our Thai lunch.  We liked it.  Entertaining and visually stimulating.

Chris tried on his 3D glasses while at lunch.  We got the glasses for AUD$1.00/pair so we can use them whenever we watch 3D films.

After the movie, we window shopped and walked around the mall.  It’s been awhile since we’ve done “malling” so this was refreshing for both of us.

Afternoon tea at Max Brenner to rest our feet from walking and to take a break before we headed to the supermarket for our grocery shopping.

How does one know our favorite chocolate flavour?  You can base it on our skintones hehe.  Chris loves dark chocolate while I love white chocolate.  I love Max Brenner’s hot white chocolate—parang ka lang umiinom ng gatas :).

After attending mass on Saturday afternoon, we went to Kmart to buy chocolate Easter eggs and bunnies in preparation for Easter festivities.  After shopping, I suggested we buy our first takeaway pizza for dinner.

Other than the fact that I’m still in a celebratory mood from Friday’s good news about my health, I figured we could use the break from home-cooked meals.  Plus, I also wanted to have a more relaxing Saturday night.

Chris being the chocoholic that he is, can’t help but order Domino’s Choco Lava Cake too.

A relaxing dinner it was as we gorged on a large Supreme Pizza and a bottle of champagne while we watched movies.

Sunday afternoon we had coffee at Coffee Culture after we picked up our developed photographs taken by our vintage camera.  We are so happy with the results!  I will share more about our great vintage finds from the Sydney Camera Market in another entry.

It was during Sunday afternoon coffee that we talked about our “strategies” for our upcoming commitments.  We’ve got very busy weeks ahead of us.  Our social calendar’s already full til the month of May.  And for some reason, it is during our coffee dates that we somehow figure out what and how we’re going to do things.  Must be a habit or a ritual ours already, I don’t know.  But one thing’s for sure, it during this coffee dates that we have created concepts for our projects.

Finally got myself a decent haircut after three months. It took me awhile to decide on whether I will just have it trimmed and continue growing it long or cut most of it off. I decided to cut it short since the cold months are creeping in, it’s getting harder to blowdry long hair. Takes me longer time to prepare to go out when I have longer hair. The last thing a woman needs during cold days is a high maintenance hairstyle. I swear, mauubos na oras mo sa pagpatong-patong ng mga damit, dadagdag pa ang pagpapatuyo ng buhok.

So my first stop for today was at the salon…and voila! New hair to welcome the new season—Autumn starts on Monday, 1 March. 🙂

That’s my stylist Ching as she walked behind me. She even cooked Tikoy (New Year Cake) and made me eat them before I left her salon. She just arrived from the Philippines for a vaycay and she was able to bring home Tikoy (the Tikoy that I want) from Manila. May haircut na, may libreng meryenda pa haha. She’s sweet like that, she almost always feeds me when I have my haircut.

I feel so much better now. Having a haircut is such a pick-upper isn’t it?

Amplaya (or Bitter Gourd) is one of my favorite vegetables. When I lived in Manila, my mom and I used to cook this every week. This dish was usually a Saturday treat for me.

Now that I’m married and cooking for our meals at home, I cook this in bulk once every fortnight which usually equals to 3 servings. I keep the other two servings in containers, put them in the fridge and we eat them in the next coming days as a siding to any meat or fish dish during dinner.

I’m grateful that my Husband generally eats vegetables. Although he eats Ampalaya, it is not his favorite vegetable which I understand. As we all know, Ampalaya is not a loveable vegetable because of its bitter taste. However, I was able to find a way to make it more likeable to my Husband’s taste buds—by adding in a few teaspoons of honey. Yes, honey makes it a little more sweeter. And according to my Husband, it is healthier than adding sugar (which I used to do).

Other ways to make Ginisang Ampalaya a little less bitter and boring:
(1) Before cooking, soak in water with salt for 10-20 minutes and squeeze some of its juice out. Some people don’t squeeze it anymore but I squeeze it at least once coz it does lessen the bitterness a bit.

(2) Add egg. When I was a kid, my mom used to add egg and it made it bearable for me.

(3) Add tofu or shrimp instead of pork. My Husband loves it too when I add tofu, so once in a while I saute the ampalaya with tofu.

(4) Use other seasonings like soy sauce, fish sauce or a teaspoon of shrimp paste (bagoong). One of these days, I will try using herbs to give it some other flavor and aroma.

(5) If you don’t have honey, you can use sugar as a substitute.

As for me, my favorite kind of Ginisang Ampalaya is one that has Okra. I know Okra is another vegetable that not so many people like, but I really really like Okra and I usually add it whenever I saute any vegetables. I don’t mind the taste of these two vegetables whenever I eat them. I love them because of their healthy benefits and I focus more on the good nutrients they give to our body.

What about you? How do you like your Ampalaya?
