Food

It’s been awhile since I’ve had coffee at My Sweet Memory (MSM) so after work yesterday, I hung out in the city with a Korean flair. I started my little adventure at Morning Glory where I enjoyed looking at cute stuff and luckily I was able to buy the most comfortable fleece pajamas ever–on sale too! Then I went to a video/music store that sells Korean DVDs/CDs so I can see the latest Kpop albums in the market. My final stop was at MSM for coffee and vanilla cupcake in a dotted cup. I took this time to do a bit of writing while I enjoy a late afternoon tea.

I see dots and cream.

After an hour, the Husband joined me. He got off work early but when he arrived, he opened his laptop to work haha.  Oh well, at least we were already together.  We both had a long day at work and to be seated next to each other while we hear the tapping of keyboards was of great comfort to us.

Do you remember Bar None and Whatchamacallit? Those were two of the most popular chocolate bars in the 80’s. There was always a debate with friends on which one’s better. They both have layers made of chocolate, caramel and wafers but the difference was that Whatchamacallit’s flavouring agent is peanut butter while Bar None stuck to chocolate. I love Whatchamacallit but I love Bar None more. Unfortunately, Bar None was discontinued in 1997.

I thought Whatchamacallit share the same faith as Bar None but last Friday, a quick stopover at IGA Express in Parramatta Westfield led us to finding Watchamacallit! I immediately grabbed two bars once I saw it. Nothing can replace Bar None but munching on Whatchamacallit bars were good enough to bring me back to my childhood.

And the saga to finding curly fries continue.

I’m already thankful that we found curly fries at The Great Bagel & Coffee Company but more so when we discovered ready-to-bake curly fries at ALDI. We knew that ALDI sells Seasons Pride Curly Fries (found at the frozen food section) but we seldom visit ALDI. But since the Hubby’s craving for it, going out of the way to buy is out of the question. So we tropped to the nearest ALDI store first thing on Sunday morning and did our groceries there.

On Sunday afternoon, I saw one of the Husband’s biggest smiles when I served baked Curly Fries for afternoon tea. He loved this more than the ones at Great Bagel & Coffee Company because it was seasoned and similar to the McDonald’s Curly Fries from the Philippines. Finally, we will never be lonely for Curly Fries. 🙂

The Husband has been bugging me for curly fries for ages. He gets his fix whenever we have a meal at Hog’s Breath Cafe but there has to be alternatives so I searched the world (exag! hehe) for any other cafes that serve curly fries and found The Great Bagel & Coffee Company. This cafe caught my eye during one of our meet-ups at Macquarie Centre. I was curious about their bagel offerings and while I looked at the menu, I learned that they serve curly fries (ting!). I promised the Husband that I’d treat him to dinner there and it all happened last night.  We enjoyed dinner last night as the food at The Great Bagel & Coffee Company was great and healthy. The food may seem “fastfood-y” but I was surprised that the food were created with fresh ingredients and everything was made upon order. Nothing fastfood-y about their food.

Only a few people know that I love milkshakes. My old favourite was the one that McDonald’s make here in Australia. I used to get drunk with their milkshake when I went on holidays here. But I dodged my love for milkshakes when I embraced a healthier lifestyle a few years back. However, last night I took my guards down and tried their Vanilla Milkshake. I’m glad I did! It was worth having their delicious and not too sweet Vanilla Milkshake served in a stainless steel glass.

I wasn’t in the mood for bagel so I opted to have the Chicken and Bacon Baguette. The bread toasted and crunchy, chicken a bit bland but the crispy bacon balanced it off with its saltiness. Tomatoes, pickles and lettuce completed the ensemble. I opted not to add any sauce (i.e. tomato or mustard) and just enjoyed the healthiness of it. Even if there was bacon, the whole ensemble was healthy because the bacon was just enough to give flavour, not deadly at all.

I ordered a siding of Curly Fries. Thank goodness I only ordered the small serving because it seemed a lot to me. I loved how they made their Curly Fries because it was crunchy and not oily. They served it unseasoned so it’s up to us to put salt in our fries, which we didn’t since we’re used to a low-salt diet anyway.  We also didn’t dip it in tomato sauce. We just enjoyed the freshness of the fries’ natural flavour.

The Husband enjoyed their Flame Grilled Steakhouse Beef Burger which came with a lot of lettuce, tomatoes and onions. It was served with a generous siding of Curly Fries. The meat of the burger was flavourful and juicy. The best thing about it was it wasn’t oily.

I wasn’t able to finish my dinner so I asked the staff if I can get a bag so I can take it home. They instead gave me a food container for the food I’d like to take away. This leftover food has become my lunch today.

We are definitely coming back to taste some of their healthy and well-made food offerings and their curly fries.

Happy 1st day of August!

The Rocks Markets has become one of Sydneysiders’ after work hang out every Friday. It started being a weekend market but once there were more people going to The Rocks on Friday night, they now start at 5:00pm every Friday.

Set amid the sandstone and cobbles, the colourful markets have grown to include more than 200 eclectic stalls. Visitors from near and far come to find fashion and accessories by emerging designers, locally-produced homewares, linen and beauty products and original photography, art, crafts and jewellery.

Other than shopping, we love the food available from the market. This is where we usually take the chance to eat kebabs (shawarma), dim sums, pork buns and red bean buns.

In one of the nights we were there, a busker provided entertainment for us by playing a guitar.

It is always a busy place, hence, we just eat anywhere we are able to find a seat.  In the photo below, I was seated at the side of a big pot of plant that serves the street’s decoration too.

The best way to enjoy the market is to be early. If you can’t be early, be ready to brave the crowd, wait in lines for food and probably eat standing up.

Getting to The Rocks
The Rocks is in central Sydney, just a short stroll from the city’s two most recognisable landmarks, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. It is also just around the corner from the Circular Quay transportation hub. The Rocks extends from the harbour in the north and east, to Kent Street in the west, and Grosvenor Street in the south.
