Domestic Bliss

The Husband and I had a very busy and physically-taxing weekend. We were non-stop from Friday afternoon working on our guest room til Saturday night.
The Husband took a half-day off work on Friday so he can start assembling the bed. When I got off work, we met at the shops so we can stop by Big W to buy some stuff we need for the home and Woolworths for some weekly grocery shopping.
After dinner, we started painting the bed frame as we wanted it to have a more neutral look. We have no theme for the bedroom as it was a collection of old and new furnitures. The bed frame, mattress and a bedside table were the only ones we bought from Ikea. We have converted a stainless steel cabinet into a clothes cabinet. It came from the Husband’s office (they were giving away free furnitures because they moved to a new building) together with a small bookshelf/bedside table that we decided to use as a bookshelf.

The paint we used was water-based so it was easy to apply, had no smell and dries after six hours of application. The first coating was done on Friday night. A second coating was done on Saturday morning.

On Saturday night, there were a lot of activites at home. Lots of moving furnitures here and there, getting rid of boxes, lifting stuff and going up and down the building to get rid of stuff we don’t need.
There’s still a couple of work to be done but our breakthru was that we had setted up the bed and placed all the other furnitures in their proper places. At least now, the guest room looks like a guest room (it looked like a storage room before) and whoever wants to sleep over now has a place to sleep.

On some kitchen news, I have finally discovered a yummy Tapsilog recipe (thanks to Pinoy Food) . I’ve been craving for Tapislog for the longest time and been planning to cook it for sometime now. So when I found this recipe online, I marinated some beef strips on Saturday morning and cooked it today for our Sunday breakfast.

We love it!!!! It reminded me of gimiks that ended too late but too early for breakfast but you and your friends are already hungry from all that dancing so you stop by a Pares-Pares Restaurant for a hot Tapsilog before going home. Ahhh heaven!

This weekend, I found some time to work on the photos I will be publishing for my Sydney’s New Year Fireworks Photoblog. Since I was also busy with organizing stuff at home, I wasn’t able to finish working on the album. I can only share this photo for now.
And with this photo, let me also greet all Weekenders a happy new year!

Weekend at home was quite busy due to our goal of turning our “storage room” into a real guest room. When we moved in to our unit, we put all our boxes and luggages that need sorting and organizing in the guest room (that’s why we call it a storage room for months). Over the Christmas break, we were able to sort out our clothes, bags, shoes and important documents. We’re not yet done but at least we can now see a space where we can put a bed. 🙂
Oh, and we were able to put away our Christmas decors too! 🙂
We finally found the time to re-upholster our dining chairs.
Our dining table and chairs were hand-me-downs from my relatives and they advised us to spray paint and change the upholstery of the chairs so it would look like new again.

And so we bought gold spray paint, black fabric and a tacker.

From blue we changed the chairs to black because we wanted something neutral to go with red (which has become the dominant color in the house).
Our re-upholstered black dining chairs

Since the Husband did most of the work re-upholstering our dining chairs, I prepared a special afternoon snack for him–Mais Con Yelo! (sweet corn with ice and milk)

This mattress topper is our best bought item for this season’s year-end clearance sale.

Since we moved to our new home, we’ve been on the lookout for a mattress topper (preferably on sale) because we want a softer feel of the bed when we sleep. We discovered the magic of a mattress topper when were in the Philippines in 2007 and vowed that as soon as we have a place of our own, we’re getting ourselves one. It’s just so comfortable and soft.

So when the clearance sales started on Friday, the mattress topper was first on our list of things to buy for the home.

Today we were lucky to find one last piece at Target priced at AUD$149.99. I knew that beddings were on sale but I didn’t really care how much the discount prices were. The regular price was already cheap compared to the ones we’ve looked at (ranging from AUD$200-AUD$400.00) so I really had not plans of letting the topper I found go.

When we paid at the counter, Chris and I were so surprised when the register read AUD$41.21!!!! OMG!!!! Such a great deal.

As soon as we got all the stuff we bought put away, we immediately fitted the mattress topper on our bed. It’s perfect!!! Now, our bed is as thick as this…

Top layer : 70% duck down for super softness; middle layer: 30% feather base; bottom layer: bed mattress.

…and so much softer.

…because I just had to do one more special gesture for the Husband because he’s the greatest husband I could ever want and hope for.

Woke up early just to write on a Christmas card I bought for the Husband…

Cooked breakfast, got his coffee ready and placed the card on the table.

Woke him up and when he took his seat on the table, he saw the card and gave me a big smile and a sweet good morning kiss.
