The Married Life

A Project of the Mr & Mrs
From 8 August to 5 September, the Husband and I will officially have a “No Going Out, No Spending Month”.  Last year, we hibernated for three weeks right after our parents left for Manila.  We called it “hibernation” but in actuality, we avoided going out and rested our pockets from spending.  It was the first time that we were able to observe not going out for three weeks.  In earlier years, we have tried this project for a week…then two weeks…then last year, three weeks.  This year, we are officially tagging this as one our household projects and we’re leveling up to four weeks (!!!).

Let’s Define Things, Shall We?
No Going Out means no parties, no eating out, no dinner out with friends, no road trips, no movie dates.  We will still go to work (just had to clear that hehe) but we will avoid hanging out at restaurants and shopping malls after work.  Also, no overstaying in supermarkets.  My Husband and I sometimes have dates inside Woolworths on Friday nights and before we knew it, we find ourselves at the counter paying for stuff we don’t need yet.

No Spending means we will only spend for the usual monthly expenditures like groceries, bills and maintenance/repairs in the home (if ever something does come up).  It is very critical that we stick to our budget for four weeks so we have both agreed that we won’t shop for unnecessary things (read: things we DON’T REALLY NEED) and we won’t give in to sales (which is usually the culprit–those freakin’ tempting sales).

Reasons That Turn Into Goals

We want physical rest. Initially, we planned this project for the whole month of June because we thought it would be great to re-charge in the middle of year and at the same time get ourselves ready for the 2nd half of 2010.  However we had to postpone it because my mom arrived in June for a short vacation.

We want rest from eating out.  We want to stay away from restaurants for awhile and just observe eating in.  Sort of like a detox.

Exercise the discipline of not spending for unnecessary things.  Last year, one of the things that we learned from not going out and spending for three weeks was the things we have are the things we need and there is no need to buy things just because it is on sale.  Sometimes we want a certain item is one and found out that it is on sale, we immediately think “We’ve got to buy this, it’s on sale already!”  But the truth is, we don’t really need it.  This doesn’t happen all the time but this project is a good reminder to my Husband and I to always count our blessings and always ask ourselves “Do we really need this?” before purchasing stuff.

We want to de-clutter our home.  We have the usual weekly de-cluttering at home but we’d like to do more de-cluttering in the next four weeks.  We plan to sort out our clothes and shoes, pack up some of the things we don’t wear or doesn’t fit and give them to church.  We want to box up some things that we don’t use in the meantime and store it properly.

We want to finish up on our photography projects.  We will take this opportunity to finish up on two events we’ve covered.

A Bit of Preparation

1.  We checked our calendar and made sure we don’t have family or friends who will be having parties.

2.  We informed friends about it.  We also announced the project via twitter and FB.   It is of great help when people around you know that you have a project like this.  We really appreciate all the positive reactions and support we got from friends (thank you!).

A Little Provision

The Husband and I are still entitled to a little breather and small pleasures.  The last thing we want is to splurge and pig out as soon as the project is over.  So we have agreed:

To have dinner at least once a week —take note: with a budget.  The dinner should not be more than AUD$20.00, and that covers both of us (so that’s AUD$10.00 per person).

That I’ll still have my weekly coffee “me” time.  I will work on a budget of AUD$10.00 or less per coffee date with myself.

That the Husband is also entitled to coffee “me” times when at work.  His coffee at work is only AUD$2.00-3.00 a cup so in a week, he will only spend about AUD$10-15.00, which is about the same cost as my weekly coffee time.

A Feeling of Excitement

The moment we decided to make this project official for four weeks, we had a bit of nerves about it.  Who wouldn’t, right?  Four weeks of avoiding temptations seems kind of overwhelming.  But we are really excited about this project.  We have faith in each other (teamwork to the max!) and in this project.  We are very positive that we can do it because we really want to rest most of all.

Wish us luck!  Since this is an official project, I will be taking notes and will share on how things turned out for us.

Thanks the Husband for the very cute logo he created for this project.

My Husband and I are still glowing with joy from the success of my cousin’s 18th birthday bash.  Last night was the culmination of two weeks of hard work.  My Husband and I were asked to cook Menudo and bake cupcakes for the party.  Other than helping out in the food, we were also in-charged of creating an AVP for the debutant and to officially cover the event.

I will share my story and photos of the event on another time.  I still haven’t shared two events we have covered: a wedding in May and a christening a week ago.  I believe I should share them first before jumping to another event.  Our photography journey is becoming exciting by the day and I really would love to document everything as I know in the future, I will be coming back to my writings for learning and inspiration.

In the meantime, let me share with you the cupcakes we especially made for my cousin’s debut.
Since this is a debut, we decided to create a simple, sweet and classic design.

We bought these cute little rose icing decors and pink & white fairy bitz.  The rose icing decors came in three different colours: pink, white and yellow.  We made two cupcake flavours this time: vanilla and chocolate.  We only used silver foils with white paper inside to hold our cupcakes.  Since this was for a debut we wanted our cupcakes to have a more classy look.

We invested in a 6-tier cupcake stand for better presentation.  Our stand can hold up to 22 cupcakes.

On the topmost cupcake, I put the rose icing decor on the side and placed one silver candle.

My cousin had two blowing-of-cake portions during the party.  One was solely with her friends and so we used the Cupcake Tower for that.  The second blowing-of-cake portion was with her big tradional cake as she was surrounded by all the guests.

We made 3 batches of cupcakes which equaled to 36 pieces.  We were told by guests that they loved our cupcakes and we can’t be happier.
To our dear cousin Rachel, we hope you had a great time on your 18th birthday. We are so happy to be a part of it.  We love you!

My mom arrived yesterday for a 7-week long holiday in Sydney.

I’m so so so happy she’s here!

She had a smooth flight but had crappy breakfast on the plane (they served softdrinks and didn’t offer coffee so she says—que horror!). She’s currently loving the cold winter weather as she said, “It’s just so hot in Manila!”. Before we went out the airport, I kept on insisting she wear her jacket but she said, “It’s not that cold”, to which I replied, “They’ve got the heaters on here but once we go outside, it will be cold”. I even brought her an extra jacket (the one I’m carrying on the photo above) but the jacket that she finally wore before we went to the parking area was enough.

From the airport, we went straight to one of my auntie’s place. This will be her second home while she’s here. She’ll be shuttling back and forth from our home to my auntie’s home so she can also spend time with my grandma and her sister.

My Husband and I spent the whole day with the relatives. I love days such as these where there’s an overflowing of great conversations and food shared by a family. After lunch, we just left all the food on the table so anyone can have a bite or two when one feels hungry.

For afternoon snack, my grandma cooked Turon (banana with langka wrapped in lumpia wrapper).

Then one of my cousins asked my auntie, “Do you have ice cream?” I’m amazed at how my auntie seems to have everything inside the fridge hehe.

Voila! Turon with Cookies and Cream ice cream.

If we’re not eating, we are usually hanging out at different parts of house. Some would be in the lounge room playing games or watching TV.

My Husband and I set up camp at the formal dining area so we can do some work. That’s one long table with our stuff. Eventually, my cousins joined him to work out some stuff about recovering some files.

But always, we end up reunited around the table for some good ‘ol fun conversation and yummy food.

Two years after the first SATC movie and the girls are back! Fun, fashion and friendship all in one movie. If you want to be entertained, you will be entertained. If you want substance, please lower your expectations. This movie has a thin plot with a long running time of 2.5 hours.

There’s not much storyline but if you are a married woman, some scenes might be relatable to you. I remember an unmarried friend of mine from the Philippines tweeted me a week ago with “You really have to watch it, Ibyang. This movie is more for married people.” And she was right. SATC 2 touched on issues about married life, parenthood, menopause blues, being a woman of today and knowing when to have a break.

The hits. I have enjoyed some heartwarming and funny moments in the film. My friends and I oohh’d and ahhh’d when we saw some of their outfits and accessories. The kind of friendship they have is still the same inspiring kind of relationship any woman would be lucky to have.

Their trip to Abu Dhabi was a miss for me. First of all, their shoot really took place in Morocco. The make-believe Abu Dhabi hotel they stayed at was an insult to the real luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi.

So was it worth our time? Yes. As followers of the tv series, it’s still nice to see their stories unfold for the second time around. My girlfriends and I have watched the series and the first movie and it’s so easy to get the jokes of the SATC girls because we’ve known them for a decade already. No matter how lame some scenes may be, we found them funny because we understand where each character’s humour or eccentricities are coming from.

Two years ago, we watched SATC together so we made a pact to watch SATC2 when it comes out of the cinemas. And that’s what we did last Saturday. Me and my girls Rache, Hilda, Ara and Yyoni met up on Saturday and saw SATC2. We had so much fun inside the cinema.
We met up at McDonald’s for a quick lunch (parang college lang kami uli!!!). It was the nearest fastfood to the cinema and we were due to watch the movie in less than 30 minutes.

After the movie, we had a bit of catch up, shopped for some hair accessories and had hot chocolate at Max Brenner. A perfect day with my girls.

Organizing an all-girls day-out is not as easy. So we are very grateful for our husbands who make it easy for us to have our “me” times. The five of us are very lucky to have husbands who would gladly drive for us, wait for us and take care of the kids for us.

My Husband, other than tag along with me to the mall, babysat Jiona (Yyoni’s daughter) for awhile.

Somehow, the friendship of the SATC2 girls reminds me so much of my friendship with my girls. Like them, our friendship goes way beyond being just friends. We treat each other as sisters….as family. Their presence in my life are food to my soul.

Hello and good day from the rainy Land Down Under!   Hope all of you are having a great week.

I was asked by one of my bloggy friends, Toni of Wifely Steps, to join in the celebration of her wedding and blog anniversary by sharing my own wifely steps.

It was such a great honour to be a  part of her celebration so I especially wrote “Lessons Learned from Marital Fights” (click! click! click on the title) for her blog.

Please visit and share your thoughts.  Thank you!
