The Married Life

We’ve been wanting to dine at this newest Chinese restaurant in Bathurst street for a long time but every time we pass by for dinner, there’s always a long queue.

On Christmas Eve, we decided that we will endure a long queue, in case there was, just so we can finally eat there.  And what do you know?  There was none.  We easily got ourselves seated with a good view of the whole restaurant and the see-through kitchen.

Chefs Gallery is a Chinese restaurant with a modern feel.  I’ve never eaten at a Chinese restaurant such as this.  I found it very refreshing to sit and eat in a minimalist ambience (they have zen-like interiors as compared to those heavy looking furniture flared up in gold and red found in traditional Chinese restaurants!)

There’s something admirable about a restaurant being transparent when it comes to preparing food.  In Chefs Gallery, guests have the privilege of watching what goes on inside their kitchen.  Inside the glassed kitchen, every staff member wears a mouth guard for hygiene purposes.  The first thing I said to the Husband when we saw them, “Ohhh, it’s like the ones we’ve seen on koreanovelas!!”  (Yes, we are fond of watching them).

Service was fast, friendly and attentive. We decided to order one dish in each course to try a bit of everything.  Our waiter smiled at us and told us, “I think that is more than enough for both of you” as we’re about to inform him of our desire for dessert.  We only laughed as our eyes made contact that said, “We’ll see about that.”

This was Christmas Eve lunch after all and other than Christmas we are celebrating a number of personal milestones that day.  To wet out appetite, we ordered the Pork Belly Roll

This was soooo good.  Pork Belly Roll is a thinly sliced blanched pork belly rolled with carrot, cucumber, topped with a garlic and oil-free vinaigrette dressing.

After the Pork Belly Roll, all the other dishes we ordered (except for dessert) arrived.  We ordered Chinese Tea so we can easily digest what we were about to eat and to help pace ourselves.

Our first time to try pastry in a Chinese restaurant with this dish called Shou Zhua Bing or Fluffy Chinese Roti served with lots of pork floss on top.  This golden pastry is soft and delicious.

The pork floss had the right amount of saltiness and made me want more.  It became an instant favorite of mine.

Since we were in Chinese restaurant, we tried the usual dishes:  Steamed Pork Buns and the Steamed Prawn Dumplings.

Sad to say, they pork buns and dumplings didn’t measure up to our expectations.

Good thing we partnered the buns and dumplings with delicious Handmade Fried Noodles.  We can’t resist the urge to try their handmade noodles so we ordered the Thick handmade noodles wok fried with shredded pork and black fungus.  The dish looked inviting and when we saw it, the Husband and I attacked it like there was no tomorrow.  It was delicious and very flavourful.  The noodles were cooked perfectly.

The noodles were also perfect for our Sweet and Dark Pork Ribs.  According to our waiter, this is one of their best sellers.  I would have loved this dish if I was fond of sweet dishes.  However, “biased-aside”, this is a great dish.  The fusion of sweetness and saltiness is immaculate.

For dessert, we ordered another best seller, the Steamed sesame ‘piggy face’ buns (as sumptuous to the eyes as it is to the taste buds according to the menu).  It’s the cutest bun we’ve ever seen!!!!  What a creative and lovely idea for a sesame bun.  An order consists two piggy face buns–a male and female!

Took me awhile to eat it because it’s soooooo cute!!!! I didn’t want to ruin their work of art. The bun was so soft and the inside was filled with black sesame paste.  It’s sweet and nutty.

Our thoughtful waiter offered to pack our leftovers for take away but surprisingly, we finished everything off.

The Husband and I enjoyed our Christmas Eve lunch and we will definitely come back here for more.

Something We Learned From Church Today

The Other Meaning of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”

From 1558 until 1829 Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly.  Someone during that era wrote this carol as a Catechism song for young Catholics.  It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church.  Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The Partridge in a Pear Tree was Jesus Christ.

Two Turtle Does were the Old and New Testament.

Three French Hens stood for Faith, Hope and Love.

The Four Calling Birds were the Four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The Five Golden Rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first Five Books of the Old Testament.

The Six Geese-a-Laying stood for the six days of Creation.

Seven Swans a-Swimming represented the Sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership and Mercy.

The Eight Maids a-Milking were the Eight Beatitudes.

Nine Ladies Dancing were the Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control.

The Ten Lords a-Leaping were the Ten Commandments.

The Eleven Pipers Piping stood for the Eleven Faithful Disciples.

The Twelve Drummers Drumming symbolised the Twelve Points of Belief in the Apostle’s Creed.

Do you sometimes have things you really need to do or buy but put them off just because you’re busy?  Who doesn’t, right?  If you are a wife that work and manage a home and at the same time have no household help, your lists of “to-do” get longer if when your schedule gets pretty hectic.

I’m grateful that for the past months, the Husband has been very supportive of my busy workload at the office.  Some weekends, he does the groceries alone so I can stay home and have more time to rest.  Sometimes he does all my errands just so I can have more time to finish my deadlines.

These past three weekends, I decided to allot time for some some serious shopping.  Although, I have started buying Christmas gifts since June, it’s about time to finish up my list and start wrapping up presents as we will be attending parties soon.  Plus, there are stuff for the home that needed to be bought or replaced (thank goodness for the Husband that take note of things like these right now!).

Replace bottle stoppers.  We realized of late that our bottle stoppers are of unreliable quality so when we found these bottle stoppers on sale, we bought them.

Replace Tefal Non-Stick Pans.  We’ve used our Tefal Non-Stick Pans for two years and it’s about time we buy new ones.  The non-stick coat of our old ones had already dissociate (not good to use anymore) so we had to replace them.

Buy Pasta Bowls.  Finally!!!!  I’ve been meaning to buy pasta bowls for like forever, I finally remembered to buy a few pieces.  We always have pasta once or twice a week so for three weeks now, we are now eating pasta dishes in proper dining ware.

Cook Fettuccine Carbonara.  As a way of saying “thank you!” to my Husband’s for being my angel during my rough and tough days, the first pasta I cooked for when we used our pasta bowls was his favorite.  I love pasta in red sauces but I try to have a balance between cooking pasta in red and white sauces.

Sort out our Winter and Summer clothes.   At the start of November, we allot an hour or two every weekend just to sort out our wardrobe.  This is also the time of the year when we give out clothes to charity so some clothes we choose are to be given away.  I’ve taken out some of our summer clothes and put away the winter clothes.  This takes time so I do it phase by phase, and we finish this task by the end of December (because some weeks in December we don’t really have time to do it).

I still have a few more things to do but I sure feel real good when I have some things ticked off my list.

What are some things you have got around to doing lately?

I had a busy and productive weekend but I was able to squeeze in a few moments to relax here and there.  I’m still having very hectic days at work so I made sure that this weekend I spend quality with myself and my Husband.  With all the things I’m doing, it’s getting hard to create balance in my life right now.  I’m finding it sometimes difficult to maintain a steady equilibrium in my world but I’m hopeful that things will soon (fingers crossed) return to normal.

I worked five days last week and on Friday, I just had to leave early as I was itching to have my quiet “me” time.  I was just exhausted dealing with work that at 3:30pm I decided to pack up and leave.  I went straight out to Starbucks to have a cup of their tall Creme Brulee Macchiato.

Creme Brulee Macchiato is the newest drink at Starbucks.  I’ve tried this once and I liked it so I just had to try it again because it’s a limited edition beverage.  I’m not sure how long it will be on the menu.  It is a creamy mix of crème brûlèe flavoured syrup and freshly steamed milk marked with intense Starbucks® espresso, topped with velvety foam with a roasty, dark caramel drizzle on top.

This warm creamy, foamy drink was perfect as I had a quiet time at Starbucks, watching people pass by and playing games on my iPod.

On Saturday, my Husband and I decided to come out of the house to do some shopping for groceries and Christmas presents.  I’ve started buying gifts since August and for the next three weeks, we will buy a few items until we complete everything.

We had heavy breakfast at home but I didn’t prepare coffee.  I suggested that we have coffee at the mall so we can have time to just relax and talk.  We hung out at Coffee Culture where the Husband had a cup of Latte and while I had a cup of Peppermint Tea.

My Husband and I shared toasted Plain Bagel with lots of Cream Cheese.

For dessert, we shared a slice of Brownie.   This is the best brownie I’ve ever tasted.  Rich, moist and not too sweet.   It has a crunchy top part which I love the most.  My Husband makes very delicious brownies but I have to say that this one from Coffee Culture is better.  I’m sorry but I’m never biased when it comes to food.

This afternoon, we had no plans of going out but after lunch, the Husband asked me out for a hot chocolate date.  Awwwww sweet.  I had so much to do but in the spirit of being spontaneous, I said, “Yes!”.

He took me to Max Brenner for afternoon tea.

Max Brenner (7 Nov 2010)

This is what I call a Hot Chocolate KISS….mwah!!!!

Max Brenner (7 Nov 2010)

I had the White Hot Chocolate while the Husband had the Hot Dark Chocolate.  And once again, the Husband ordered a slice of Max Brenner’s Choc-Nut Fudge Brownie (he’s such a chocoholic).

Max Brenner (7 Nov 2010)

Such a very chocolate-y Brownie.  It had drizzles of dark chocolate and milk chocolate.  It’s so mouthwatering.  And it had walnuts which I find very interesting and delicious at the same time.

That’s three cafes in three days.  Short sweet moments that gave me time to clear my mind and spend quality time with my Husband.

Hope you had a sweet weekend!

On Monday when the Husband arrived home from work and we were wrapped up in each others arms (that’s how we greet each other when one comes home–with big, tight hugs) I asked him a question that warmed my heart.

Me:  What’s the best part of your day today?
Him: You!!!!

Awwwwwww.  I’m so kilig.  We usually ask each other that question when we have “our talk before sleep” and I don’t know why I asked it randomly.  It’s certainly one of those spontaneous moments.

Today we are celebrating our 45th (wedding) monthsary and he surprised me with a chocolate mousse cake.  And even if he’s done tons of surprises to me,  he never gets tired.  His simple gestures make me fall inlove with him over and over.  Everyday, HE makes me fall inlove with him…even after 45 months of being married.
P.S.  This month, we realized that our wedding anniversary next year will be doubly special as we will also celebrate 10 years of knowing each other.   Who would have thought that the man I met on January 2001 will turn out to be my partner and best friend?
