…literally and figuratively speaking.

We had a sunny weather today, as if to make the first day of Summer here in Australia. And everytime the sun shines brightly throughout the day, we will surely be watching a beautiful show of colors during sunset, just like today. Husband and I were in awe of the spectacle infront of us after dinner.

This was the view from our balcony a few minutes before 8 o’clock tonight.

The sunset in focus…

Almost twilight…

To the one above who makes all things possible and spectacular, thank you for a beautiful day…and thank you for the wonderful surprise you blessed us with today.

Last Saturday (27/11/08), we saw endless hectares of vineyards!!!! It was so beautiful and mesmerizing.

Hunter Valley is the most well-known wine regions in Australia, about two hours drive from Sydney. Other than being abundant in vineyards and wines, their produce also includes cheese, olives and olive oil.

Other than enjoy the beautiful sceneries that Hunter Valley can offer, people often come here for Wine and Cheese Tastings, have long lunches in one of the many restaurants, explore the Hunter Valley Gardens, enjoy Horse Drawn Carriage Tours, ride on Hot Air Balloons, and visit Historic Villages and Museums to name a few.

On our first visit to Hunter Valley, we went there solely for three wine tastings (not one, not two, but three!).

Our first stop was at the McGuigan Winery. Twas our first experience at wine tasting and the best of all the three wine tastings we attended last Saturday. Here’s why:

When we arrived there, we were ushered in to a private area and all of us were sitted as if we were in a bar. On the table, we were welcomed with a small wine glass each, a piece of paper that has a list of the wines they offer, a pencil so you can take down notes, biscuits and a bottle of water. Very organized, aye?

All we had to do is just sit, listen to the winery host, drink the wines they pour on our glasses, jot down what wines we like and just enjoy! And did I mention that this wine tasting was free??? So yay!

After I taste each wine, I jot down how my tastebuds reacted to the wine. In McGuigan’s, we tasted about 3 whites, 3 reds, 2 dessert wines and the last one was their Tawny Port (that according to Chris tasted like Kiamoy hehehe).

After our wine tasting, we bought about 7 bottles of wine. They gave 10% discount for every bottle and for those who bought 12 bottles, they got another bottle for free. Very very nice. Session was free but you still get a 10% discount.

Our next wine tasting session was at the Tyrrell’s Winery. Now, this was where we got really tipsy.

The session started with a short history of Tyrrell’s Wines and we were shown where the wine was created and stored.

They had these big barrels worth AUD$15,000 each (barrel palang yun, wala pang laman) where they store their red wines.

After that we were ushered in to their bar, standing room only this time. No chairs, no pencils, no paper. We just stood near the bar and waited for the wines to be poured into our glasses.

Now what made us really really tipsy was that they poured the wines too quick. The wines kept coming one after another. Good thing they served cheese and biscuits.

Before I knew it, I was becoming “happier”, laughing like crazy with Faith (family friend)–in short, makulit na kami bigla. May tama na kami! 🙂 And you know, the thing with me when I get tipsy, I never turn red…I turn the opposite–I become pale. So this is me, tipsy and happy…

We never bought anything at Tyrrell’s. For one, we cannot remember the wine we liked and two, we paid $5.00 for the wine tasting and we weren’t even given a chair to sit. Although they do have wines that was good, I just jotted down the name on my notebook (yes, I brought one) and will just buy it in the liquor stores.

So what did we do to get rid of our “amats” (tipsiness)? We explored Tyrrell’s vineyard and took photos under the shining sun.

After session number two, we had lunch outside the Hunter Valley Gardens. That gave us a chance to sober up. At 2:00pm, we went back to McGuigan’s for Cheese Tasting. Wasn’t really interested so we just hang outside and waited for our group to finish.

Last stop was at Rosemount Winery. Paid $4.00 for this session but they had chairs to sit and we were given a wine list so we can at least take note of the wine the host was introducing.

The photo above seemed like I was a drunkard with a wine glass in each hand but no, I’m also holding husband’s glass while he takes photographs. And I really avoided getting tipsy this time by passing off on some of the wines offered to us.

We bought two bottles of “O” at Rosemount. One of the best wines I’ve tasted so far.

We loved the vineyards at Rosemount, they’re taller compared to others. Before we left, we had one last photograph near their vineyard.

It was such a beautiful day to be at the Hunter Valley…and to get drunk hehe. Husband and I really enjoyed it a lot. We hope to visit again next year.

Sa totoo lang, weekend mode pa rin ako.

I’m here at home…and sick with fever, runny nose and sore throat. I believe the stress of moving has taken a toll on me so here I am, alone in our apartment having my nido soup for lunch.

With all the moving and getting the unit all cozied up, we managed to attend the Night Noodle Festival on Thursday night where I got exposed to a chilly breeze. I think that’s when it all started. When we got home on Thursday night, I had a runny nose then.

Friday night, we attended a kapamilya’s debut. Other than attending the party, Chris and I were the photographers for the event. We had fun and enjoyed the shoot and the partying with our relatives, however, we were so stressed that night. With moving and going to work (Chris came straight from work to the party while I took the day off because the fridge was delivered and I did laundry). Grabe! I’ve never felt so tired in a long time. Chris was the main photographer and for the first time, he left me on my own that night, as in he took a break outside the venue. Mygosh talaga.

On Friday I realized how hard it is to wear a dress now when going to parties. Nababawasan ako ng feminine factor dahil hindi na ako makapag-dress dahil photographer ako hehe. I was part of the 18 candles and decided to wear a dress BUT two hours before the event, I had to change to a pair of slacks. When going to parties before, all I ever get ready was my make-up, and hair, what outfit, bag and perfume to wear—puro kakikayan. Ngayon, when going to parties, inuuna ko muna mag-charge ng batteries, mag-impake ng tripod, flash, diffuser AT hindi na ako makapagsuot ng evening bag.

Oh well, it’s ALL worth it. Iba pa rin ang fulfillment ng photography lalo na kung ang mga taong kinukuhanan mo ay sobrang sumaya ng dahil sa mga litrato mo.

Saturday was shopping day again. We bought groceries (kasi may fridge na kami!!! hehe) and other stuff like electric fan, sampayan, new placemats (I can never have too many placemats haha). Our unit is starting to feel like home now. The kitchen is the most setted up area in our place coz I made sure that almost all we need are bought beforehand. For dinner, we were finally able to use real plates!!! I finally got to unpack our Corelle box.

Yesterday, we stayed home, did cleaning and some sorting out of stuff. I started unpacking the luggages that holds our clothes. The goal for the day was to at least unpack two luggages. The plumber also dropped by to do some repairs. Last night, we were finally able to eat at a decent time (7:00pm) and slept at a decent hour (about 10:00pm). It was also last night that my fever gone up so no work for me today. And later this afternoon, I will be going to the doctor.

What about you? How was your weekend?

Let me “jologify” two things we learned on the day we went to Canberra for the Floriade: (1) It’s always a blessing in the skies and (2) You can never can tell. 🙂

On the eve of our roadtrip, Teena sent an email to everyone asking for a Plan B because there was a forecast of numerous showers and possible thunderstorm in Canberra. My only reply to the email was for everyone to bring an umbrella since we had no choice but to still go as this was planned during our Snowy Mountains trip (that was in August), besides it’s not as if Floriade would run for a long time. We actually decided on the 2nd to the last weekend of Floriade Festival as everyone was busy in September.

Saturday morning, we were supposed to leave Sydney at 6:15am but for some reason that Jackie cannot explain we were an hour late (peace Jack!). Nothing to worry as we had the whole day to burn anyway.

A pleasant surprise for me and Teena was that Jackie had to join us inside the car because the Gillegos had relatives who joined them.

So what happens when three friends get together during a roadtrip??? Instant sleepover party!!!! Ang kikay-kikay namin!!! 🙂

Ninety percent of our roadtrip was all rain and gloom. We expected the worst when we arrive in Canberra–that we would never be able to enjoy it or even go around the garden, that our shoes would be all muddy and we’d be soaked to death. But we were hopeful nonetheless, na kahit 2 hours lang sana pagbigyan kami. We even bargained: that even if it’s cloudy or gloomy as long as there’s no rain, that would be fine with us. At wala ring tigil si Teena sa pag-sundance sa loob ng kotse!! Kakanood lang kasi niya ng “A Very Special Love” (inggit ako hehehe).

We dropped by a certain McDonald’s (we don’t know the exact location basta ang nasa isip namin para kaming na SLEX) for breakfast. We were famished. Chris and I both had muffins and hash browns, then had to order pancakes (bitin sa muffins!).

The first “it’s a blessing in the skies” and “you can never can tell” moment was finding Janet and Archie’s family in McDonald’s too! Instant cocktail party at McDo ang drama kaso coffee at juice ang hawak instead of wine and spirits. There were eight of us and there was only one table (punuan sa McDo what do you expect?) so para magkaka-level ang lahat, we just stood up most of the time we were having breakfast.

And because we’ve missed Janet during our September get-together, we can’t help but have a photograph with her (artistahin!). People were looking at us, wondering why we’re taking photos inside McDo but who cares???

Back on the road after our 30-minute breakfast. After another hour and a half of driving, we finally saw the Telstra Tower (isang senyales na malapit na kami sa aming destinasyon) and lo and behold, the skies were clearing up, we’re finally seeing blue!!! Yipee!!!! There is light at the end of the very dark, wet and long tunnel.

Arrived at Canberra at 11:30am. In order to be full and ready for walking the whole afternoon, we decided to have early lunch at the park…as in parking lot. 😛

While having lunch, we had a weather scare—coz it drizzled a bit! But we were like “Bahala na talaga si Batman!” Enjoy-mode na lang talaga kami because we travelled for three hours just to be there.

After lunch we gathered up our things and geared up for the Floriade Festival! I was sooo excited! Another first time for me and Chris…I really waited for him to be here so we can experience the Floriade together.

All roads lead to the Floriade

Flowers in the Middle of the Street

As we entered Floriade, the sun miraculously shone and this spectacular sight welcomed us…oh-em-gee! 🙂 It’s soooo beautiful!

Lots and lots of Tulips everywhere!!!

This year’s theme is “Films That Shaped Our Nation” so the formation of the flowers were based on Australia’s favorite films. One example is the Crocodile Dundee movie.

Other films featured (the ones I know) were Happy Feet and Babe. But I didn’t really care about the formations of these garden beds. I’m so in awe of all the beautiful flowers around me that I didn’t really notice whether they’re forming something or what. All I know is that I love it!!! I love the Floriade! 🙂

Because the sun was out during the whole time we were exploring the Floriade, wala talaga kaming masabi kungdi “It’s really a blessing in the skies” at “You can never can tell” hahaha. We realized that it was meant for us to be late after all, because had we been early, we wouldn’t be able to go around because according to one of our friends who was there early, it rained in the morning.

The weather was perfect during our Floriade adventure. Although there were times when the clouds would block the sun, it was all good as long as it doesn’t rain. The sun was hot most times but there was a cool breeze from time to time, so we weren’t sweating much.

We left Floriade at 5:00pm and had one stopover at The Bakery of Goulburn for early dinner.

The Bakery of Goulburn has got the best pies this side of town. Chris and I had a meat pie each, potato wedges and hot chocolate. Yummy and filling.

On the last leg of our roadtrip, we braved thunderstorms on the way home while talking of childhood experiences in the Philippines. Never a dull moment with my girls.

Special thanks to Louie and Teena for the ride and sundance hehe; to Jojo and Jackie, Archie and Janet, Che and Dom for the great company. Mwah!!!

I’ve already uploaded some of our photos:
