The newest cafe in Blacktown, “Coffee Culture“, has finally opened. Situated by the right side of the Westpoint’s entrance, you won’t miss this vibrant looking cafe.

The cafe made use of their high ceilings by enclosing their lightbulbs in funky-looking wooden spheres, making the ambience youthful and refreshing.

Interiors were a combination of leather and canvas and a play of brown and orange colors. Cozy and warm to the eyes.

Their sofa had an accent of aqua blue buttons and I love it! I just had to ask the Husband to take a photo of me with it.

Their very welcoming counter. Don’t you just love counters that look organized?

I noticed their clean kitchen too (yes, I took a peak!) and their wide array of organic drinks inside their fridge while their shelves showcases different kinds of tea.

I like it when restaurants personalize their paraphernalias. At Coffee Culture, other than their plates and mugs (they were all in orange and they had the name “Coffee Culture” painted on them), they had their numbers (the one given to customers after they paid for their orders) personalized too!

I have tried two of their sweet mocha coffees: the Choffee (Chocolate Latte) and the White Choffee (White Chocolate Lattee). I love how they tasted. Very chocolate-y and yet you can still taste the coffee. And their coffee has this certain freshness that I can taste and smell.

With every order of coffee, they add two pieces of these crunchy coffee beans covered in chocolate. A first time for me to experience something like this and it was kind of interesting. The taste of their crunchy coffee beans gave that extra caffeine fix and it sort of becomes a supplement to the coffee I am drinking.

We’ve tried their Chicken Caesar Wrap, delicious and filling. We just ordered one wrap and my Husband and I shared this (the barista cut them into half).

Their Brownies are to die for–very rich but the sweetness wasn’t overwhelming. The top part of the brownie had a thin chocolate frosting.

We’ve also tried a slice of their Carrot Cake which is different from other carrot cakes I’ve tasted. Their Carrot Cake had the usual frosting on top but on the edge of the cake, they had it covered in coconut. They also served it with whipped cream if ever you are wanting for some more sweetness.

I’ve been spending my “Me” times here now. Other than the delicious coffee and food, cozy ambience and friendly baristas, they also provide free Wi-Fi for an hour (just ask them for the access when you order).

I’m looking forward to the warmer weather in a couple of weeks so I can taste their cold drinks.

Now, who wants to have coffee with me?!?

This year’s Floriade’s theme was Mind, Body and Soul which aimed to rejuvenate visitors to Canberra’s flower festival. Some of the featured flower beds were Clouds, Water Drop, Music for the Soul, Family and Friends, Love, Yin and Yang and Sunlight.

Our experience this year was quite different compared to last year’s. This year, we had moments of hits and misses.

The Flower Beds…most of it a miss, some of it a hit.

The flower beds weren’t as spectacular compared to last year although for first timers, they would find the festival amazing nevertheless. For my friends and us (Husband and I) who had seen last year’s, we were quite disappointed that the flower beds weren’t as rich as before. One thing we noticed was that there weren’t that much tulips and most of the garden fillers were just green plants instead of small flowers.

However, there were some flower beds which were still abundant in flowers such as the Sunlight flower bed (see photo above) and they were still beautiful backdrops for photo ops.

Individual Flowers…a hit and a miss.

Due to the dust storm and heavy rains that’s been happening in NSW and Canberra, it damaged most of the flowers. Almost all the flowers had red stains due to the dust storm. Photographing individual flowers took a little more patience in finding the not-so-damaged ones.

The Canberra weather…a hit and a miss.

If you would notice, we were in jackets that day (we were in winter clothes!). Simply because it was between 5-10 degrees and really, really windy. It was rain and shine that day, meaning, one minute it would be raining and then it would be sunny the next. Para kaming nakikipag-hide and seek kay Haring Araw.

The Food…a hit!

The foodie that I am, trust me to find the yummiest food in any event and I will surely find it. Upon entrance to the Floriade, I smelled the fragrance of sweet donuts so I followed my senses and found this little amazing and cute Honey Donut Puffs.

I loved it! It was easy to eat and the sweetness was just right. Later in the morning, there was a horde of people waiting in line just to have a taste of these donuts. Good thing, we were there early.

The rides…a hit!

One of the things we weren’t able to do last year was to get on a ride. Since my godson Caleb is toddler now, Jackie and I bought tickets to the Tea Cup Ride so Caleb can experience it. The funny thing was Jackie was more scared of it than Caleb while I laughed all throughout the ride, just enjoying and having fun. In fairness to Jackie, the ride was kinda dizzy hehe.

The Lotus Lounge…a hit!

This place was our respite from all the wintry weather we experienced at the Floriade. The Lotus Lounge had this cozy ambience and thanks to the heaters they provided, this place turned out to be the best place to rest from all the walking we did in the morning. This was where we had hot chocolates while we gave our legs a rest.

Shopping…a hit!

A hit because I found this cool, innovative bags made by a Japanese designer based in Hobart. The brand is called Sashiko Design. I will share with you the designer’s details in another entry.

Lunch at the Park-ing Lot (hehe)…a hit!

We could have had lunch at the festival. We could have had lunch at the Canberra’s City Centre. But despite the crazy weather that day (we knew beforehand that we will be experiencing rains), we insisted on bring pot luck and eat at the park…in our case, at the parking lot hehe. We all shared a very yummy menu: Bopis, Menudo, Adobo and Itlog na Maalat (Salted Egg). And because it was raining during lunchtime, we had to improvise. Ginawa naming Jolly-jeep ang sasakyan nila Jackie hehe. It was one funny and memorable lunch.

Stopover at Bakery of Goulburn on the way home…a hit!

Our Floriade trip won’t be complete if we don’t have a taste of The Bakery of Goulburn’s delicious meat pies. This also became our stopover on our way back, but a long stopver as we took our time savoring our meat pies and coffees and talked some more.

This year’s Floriade may have had a couple of misses but we are grateful that we had the company of our friends who made our trip to Canberra worthwhile, memorable and enjoyable. And even if the festival wasn’t as spectacular as last year, this gave us the chance to enjoy other stuff at the festival other than just the flowers and flower beds. Yes, the flowers may be the main event of the festival, but there is more to the festival than that.

Floriade 2009 Collection

Some Tips:

1. Floriade is an event in Canberra, Australia every Spring that runs for 5 weekends (usually starts on the 2nd week of September). To know more about the Floriade before going there, check out its website: http://www.floriadeaustralia.com

2. Wear sunblock even if it’s cold and cloudy. Even if the sun isn’t shining, you must protect yourself from UV rays. And don’t forget to bring your sunglasses too!

3. Bring a jacket. Whenever you are going to Canberra, always bring a jacket with you. Weather can be unpredictable and when it’s cold in Canberra, it can really be cold.

4. Bring an umbrella. You’ll never know when it’s going to rain.

5. Be early so (1) you can get a parking spot and (2) you can enjoy the festival more when there’s not much people yet.

6. Check out Canberra’s weather forcast via http://www.weather.com.au/act/canberra

7. Check out the stalls that sell local produce–they sell at a lower price during the festival.

No matter how scary any weather catastrophe may be, I am always in awe of the power of nature. Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved watching a storm unfold before my very eyes. I remember sitting by the clearglass door of my parents’ home, it had a view of the backyard. On days when classes were suspended, I’d sit there for hours and watch water and wind dance infront of me. Sometimes there’d be thunder and lightning to complete the ensemble.

Today, I had been a witness to another weather catastrophe, a dust storm that hovered over Sydney in red and orange hues. It was a sight to behold, but dangerous like those stormy weathers that we are used to seeing.

Sydney was in a panic when they woke up and saw red outside their windows. A lot of people muttered, “Is this the end of the world?” Funny because it was so surreal. Scary because at that moment it could be true.

I, myself, was shocked when I walked outside our room and saw a reddish and windy dawn. I thought there was a nasty bushfire in the mountains–too nasty that it was already outside our balcony–but it wasn’t, there was no fire anywhere. I quickly called out to the Husband and said, “You have to see this.” He jumped out of bed, looked outside the window, forgot about sleep and turned on the TV. It was a dust storm. The first one to happen in Sydney.

Have I got a choice, I would have stayed home and watch the dust storm while I sip coffee by our balcony. Watch it circle around Sydney’s skies and see it fade away til the blue skies appear once again.

But then it wasn’t so bad to be out and experience the dust storm that was. Here are some more photos from this morning’s weather phenomenon.

My Husband and I took photos while waiting for our train this morning. Chris brought our camera to work so he and his friend John (who’s a professional photographer) can take photos.

Like any other storm, the dust storm came to an end as the day progressed. The skies finally cleared after lunch. It was still windy though but at least no more dust to irritate our eyes and respiratory system.

Today was supposed to be an ordinary day but due to the weather phenomenon, it turned out to be kinda awesome. But however awesome it may be, for the sake of everyone’s health and safety, I sure hope something like this won’t happen again.

Woke up this morning and saw RED.

As of now, New South Wales is experiencing a dust storm. According to news, the red dust is coming from the inlands of NSW and the reason why it is red is because the lands of NSW is so dry, a sign of drought.

This is a first time for me and the Husband…and also a first time for Sydney. According to news, (red) dust storms normally occurs in the western regions of Australia but never in Sydney. I’ve googled dust storms in Australia and indeed, there were a couple of dust storms in this country for a couple of years.

Will share more photos later. Have a great day Sydney! And to the rest of the world, good day!

P.S. In the Phils, we have experienced ashfalls when the Mt. Pinatubo erupted and the joke at that time was “libreng face powder”. This morning I realized, “libreng blush-on itech!” kasi red hehe.

Last Saturday, a different kind of sunset was seen from our balcony. This time the sunset had haze.

Tried taking a photo of the haze. I’m not sure where it was coming from. Probably from the mountains because it was a hot day that day.

In a few more minutes, the sun had set and this beautiful spectacle left me in awe and grateful for another beautiful, blessed day.

I only uploaded these photos tonight and when I saw this 3rd photo above, it reminded me of one of my favorite songs, “Visions of a Sunset” sung by Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men. Every word of that song is very true to me. Whenever I hear or sing that song, I shed tears of joy as I’m grateful for the life I’m given and living.

Let me share the lyrics with you. If you get an MP3 of this song, I swear you won’t regret it. Also, this song was an original soundtrack from the movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus”, a movie that I also like because it’s a touching story of a teacher, who instead of composing music, chose to selflessly teach in order to raise his family and educate young students.

Visions of a Sunset”

Oh Yeah
Lived all my days trying to embrace
Life with my heart by all the beauty
I feel and create it spins and moves
Flows at my pace telling its story
From the tear running down my face

[Chorus:]
Visions of a sunset just appear when
I close my eyes
Takes my closer to heaven when the
Flute starts to fly
And the violin cries

Confusion leaves while peace
Orchestrates runs through my
Veins and in other seekers it
Penetrates my reason why
The big city air smells so sweet

Takes me through journeys
In time from my youth to as
Far as I can see

[Chorus ]

It’s all I need in my life
It’s all I need and no one
Can take your place by my side
You’re all inside of me

[Chorus ]

We’ll free from all sorrow
Like the wind blows from the sky
Takes me closer to
Heaven when the
Flute starts to fly
