BEN HUR is a dramatic story set in biblical times told by majestic costumed actors in a Roman Amphitheatre with a spectacular full-scale chariot race and gladiator battles.

Academy Award® winning actor Russell Crowe is the Narrator of this lavish production, providing the historical context, character background and the storyline links between the 10 scenes.

The rich dialogue of the actors tells the compelling story of one man’s fight for freedom, while a powerful musical soundtrack and stunning light show makes this show a major event extravaganza.

Direct from Europe, the stadium-scaled show will be the biggest theatrical event ever seen in Australia! This world tour premiere of BEN HUR in Sydney brings to life the legend made famous by the Academy Award® winning Hollywood movie ‘Ben Hur’, starring Charlton Heston.

Crafted by renowned French director Robert Hossein, BEN HUR was watched by over 300,000 people in its Paris debut. This major event theatrical presentation features a cast of hundreds, a full-scale chariot race with 24 horses, a giant Roman galleon and audience participation for young and old alike.

The monumental $15 million stadium adaptation combines the scale of the Sydney Olympic Games Opening Ceremony with the drama of the slave who dared defy the Roman Empire.  {source}

I didn’t have any interest to watch Ben Hur but the Husband wanted to experience a once in a lifetime stadium spectacular so I bought us tickets as my birthday gift to him in September.

For a theatre enthusiast like me, I’m glad we watched this play because it was really an awesome experience.  My Husband and I brought a few of our gears with us to take photos of the play.  Here’s a few photos we’d like to share with you.

Ben Hur (22 October 2010)

“Roman musicians” welcomed us infront of ANZ Stadium.

I looked like a tiny schoolgirl with these Roman soldiers.  Since this was an outdoor event, The Husband and I decided to be in our most casual clothes.  When we left home, we felt like we were going camping with our backpacks in tow.

Ben Hur (22 October 2010)

ANZ gave out these seat covers made of foam to everyone watching the show.  Such a very useful giveaway.  We can use these when we go to beaches and picnics.

Where we sat.  Not a bad view.  I hated the big statues though.  It got in the way, an eyesore to our photographs.

Ben Hur (22 October 2010)

The Roman Army paying homage to the Emperor of Tiberius.  Numbers to remember:  15,000 sqm performance area; 200 actors; 24 horses for the full scale chariot race.  One word to describe Ben Hur’s production: Enormous.

The scene in the Aegean Sea where Ben Hur fought with the Romans and saved Quintus Arius, commander of the Emperor’s boat, twice.

The Gladiator’s combat to celebrate Quintus’ return to Rome.

Ben Hur (22 October 2010)

This was one of the best parts of the play as the audience were asked to participate by cheering for the either the Yellow Gladiators or the Red Gladiators.  When we entered the ANZ Stadium, we were given white handkerchiefs to cheer for the Gladiators in Yellow tunic.

Messala, Ben Hur’s rival, broke his axle and fell to the ground, resulting to him losing the race.  Ben Hur won!

The last scene.  Ben Hur in Jerusalem at the valley of the lepers where he found his mother and sister.  As soon as he found them, Jesus appeared carrying his cross and fell to the ground.  Ben Hur helped him and gave him water to drink.  The lepers gathered around Jesus, then suddenly thunder and lightning struck and the lepers were healed.

Let me be honest.  We weren’t really prepared when we arrived in Melbourne for my Husband’s birthday.  We arrived there with no concrete plans of where to go and eat.  We arrived with no reservations to any restaurants!! (I know, que horror!)   We had inklings, we had ideas, but nothing definite.  However, one thing was clear: we hoped to eat good food while we were there.

maze Grill was just the second option to have my Husband’s birthday lunch but it turned out to be the best gastronomical experience we’ve had on the trip.  One that I could call a happy accident.  I booked lunch at maze Grill a day before and we were lucky to get a table.

Our reservation was at 12:30 but arrived 30 minutes early.  We were prepared to wait at the bar or lobby (they had this posh waiting area for customers) but the friendly staff told us it was fine and accommodated us to our table right away.

Gordon Ramsay’s maze in Melbourne is actually two restaurants–one is maze and the other one is maze Grill.  maze is a fusion of French and Australian cuisines while maze Grill offers sizzling meat and fish hot off the char grill presented on custom made Australian timber boards.

Stylish interiors and high ceilings were the first two things that I noticed.  Although it may seem a little on the formal side, it is actually not.  Smart casual is an acceptable attire for lunch at maze Grill.

We were served Rosemary bread and butter.  Very flavourful bread.

For starters, we had Crispy soft shell crab with Harrissa mayonnaise.  This was my first time to try Harrissa mayo and I loved it.  The soft shell crab was crunchy and fresh.

For our salad, we chose the Watermelon, Feta and Avocado Salad with lime dressing.  Refreshing.  I never knew that combining three of my favorites, watermelon, feta and avocado, can be this delicious.

The Husband’s main course was the maze Grill burger with a siding of beetroot, avocado and tomato.  Perfectly grilled and very juicy on the inside.  The best burger we’ve tasted.  We noticed a lot of guests ordered this burger and once we’ve tasted how good it was, we knew why.

Whole-grilled Poussin with Lemon and Harissa was a delight to the senses.  I smelled it even before it arrived on our table.  The combined fragrance of grilled chicken with the hint of spice, cinnamon and lemon wafted through the air, I almost tasted it.  Truly an unforgettable gastronomical experience right there and then.  And the taste?  Chicken heaven inside my mouth.  The poussin was tender, juicy and flavourful.  Simply a beautiful dish.

There’s not much room left in our tummy but I insisted we at least share a dessert.    We ordered Mini Profiteroles with Ice Cream and Chocolate Syrup.  In Australia, we call them Profiteroles but in other countries, they are called Cream Puffs.

I was amused with the presentation of this dish.  The ice cream was sandwiched between six mini profiteroles.  It looked so cute!  The profiteroles tasted a bit bland but the ice cream and chocolate syrup made up for the sweetness I hoped for.

I paired our dessert with Peppermint Tea to help in digesting all the great food we ate and enjoyed so much!

Our lunch took two hours….two wonderful hours.  We almost forgot about the time.  There’s nothing like savouring food and cherishing every moment of a gastronomical indulgence.

I’m grateful for the staff of maze Grill for their hospitality and I commend their chefs for all the beautiful, delicious food they served us.  They made my Husband’s birthday celebration a very happy one.

The Husband not so long ago upgraded to a new phone.  After three years of waiting for the iPhone 4, he finally acquired the phone he wanted.  I know that sounded quite weird–waiting for an iPhone 4 for three years when it only came out this year.  My Husband is a patient man.  When the iPhone came out a few years back, he said he wanted that kind of phone and more.  He knew that in the long run Apple would come out with an iPhone that would cater to all his needs.  And it did.  Patience is indeed a virtue.

Now that he has one, we are now experiencing and enjoying the world of applications and the ones we enjoy most are the apps for photo enthusiasts.

Here are a few of the Apps we like:

Hipstamatic iPhone App gives you the look and feel of lomo-like images.  If you are a Lomography enthusiast, you will love this as much I do.  You can choose your film, lens and and flash, just like you’re using a lomography camera.

Here are some samples of the photos we’ve took:

Diptic iPhone App lets you quickly and easily combine two or three of your photos to create a new image. The resulting photograph is called a diptych (if it is made up of two images) or a triptych (if it is made up of three images). Diptychs and triptychs have been used for many years in art photography. With this app, anyone can quickly and easily create diptychs and triptychs.  Buy this app here and you can make creative collages.

Instagram app is an easy way to share your photos online.  Snap a photo with your iPhone, choose a filter to transform the look and feel, send to Facebook, Twitter or Flickr – it’s all as easy as pie. It’s photo sharing, reinvented. You can buy this app here.

Here’s a photo we took of a train station in Sydney.  We took this one while we were waiting for the train.  We used a filter to make it look like a lomo photograph.

What about you?  Do you have any favorite photo applications?

We slept in on our second day in Melbourne so we decided to just have coffee to give us the good wake up that we deserved on a holiday.  Our feet led us to David Jones because I read about a coffee concept store called “Sensory Lab” that can be found inside their store.
Sensory Lab (Melbourne, Australia)

The moment we arrived, I knew we were going to have a very interesting (if not unforgettable) experience.

Sensory Lab (Melbourne, Australia)

We were greeted by servers dressed in lab coats—how cool was that?  And the interiors of the cafe?  Very lab-like!  I felt like I had been transported back to 3rd-year high school attending Chemistry class.
Sensory Lab (Melbourne, Australia)

They served us water in a laboratory bottle.

Their sugar in brown small bottles.

Their menus in clipboards.

Sensory Lab (Melbourne, Australia)

Very science geeky, aye?

They have a comprehensive list of coffee blends and single-origin beans and offer four types of brewing one of which is the siphon method.  The siphon method is an intensive way of brewing coffee with the use of a coffee syphon or vac pot.  Thru this method, it preserves the taste of the beans and minimizes the bitterness.

Sensory Lab (Melbourne, Australia)

They recommended the Tanzania blend to us and when they served our coffee, they advised us to wait two minutes before we drink them.  It is also recommended not to add milk or sugar to truly appreciate the flavour of coffee.

Sensory Lab (Melbourne, Australia)

The Tanzania siphoned coffee had an aggressive sour taste.  One thing I learned about coffee during my time at the Sensory Lab was that coffee beans are the seeds of a cherry-like fruit, hence, it is but normal for coffee to be sour.

For the first time, we were able to experience tasting pure coffee and I loved it!

Two months ago, I asked the Husband, “Where do you want to celebrate your birthday?  Beach or city?”  And he answered, “City.”  So I booked a trip to Melbourne as this was one of our favorite cities.  We celebrated my birthday in Melbourne last year so I thought of giving the favor back to the Husband.

We didn’t have any concrete plans when we arrived in Melbourne.  Our friends who lived there asked us what we planned to see or do and we replied, “Nada.”  But even with no plans, we saw a couple of places and exhibitions, discovered gastronomic indulgences and hung out with friends.  It was one of the Husband’s happiest birthday celebration and one of the most memorable getaways we’ve experienced.

I’ve got tons of food and travel experiences to share from our recently concluded Melbourne trip but for now, I’m going to share the highlights of our Spring getaway.

Our first meal on Wednesday was lunch at La Citta,  a cozy Italian restaurant in  Degraves Street.  The Husband and I each had a bowl of pasta and a glass of white to celebrate our arrival in Melbourne.

Lunch at La Citta

For dessert, we walked along Elizabeth Street and found this little store called Spanish Doughnuts.  They sell the most delicious Churros I’ve ever tasted.  Really, their Churros are something to die for.

Churros from Spanish Doughnuts

After lunch and dessert, we went back to our hotel to rest for a while and unpack our stuff.  We arrived with champagne waiting inside our room.  I had to call the front desk to make sure they didn’t make a mistake as we didn’t order anything nor we were VIPs.  But they assured us it was a welcome gift.  How sweet!

Champagne to welcome us in Rendezvous

Re-charged from a short power nap, we went out to meet up with our friend Lui.  Our first ride was the City Circle Tram provided by the city for free.

City Circle Tram

Wednesday evening was spent at Costco.  The first ever Costco in Australia is in Melbourne and we took the chance to see it with Lui.  It was a fun, massive shopping experience.  Almost everything inside that store is big, it was amusing!  We can’t wait for Sydney to open its own Costco store.  We shopped for a couple of items (mostly Hershey’s chocolates) and had dinner in the Costco food court which also serve massive food servings.

Sunset in Melbourne

Thursday morning, we had late coffee at Sensory Lab.  It’s a cafe with a concept of a laboratory–the servers wear labcoats!  And being inside their cafe is like being inside a science laboratory.  We tried their Tanzania brewed by syphon method

Sensory Lab

It was our first time to try syphoned coffee.  A different gastronomical experience to the normal brewed coffee we usually drink.

Spent most of the day at Water City and Harbour Town Shopping Centre at Docklands.  Water City is like their version of Darling Harbour.   We took lots of photos at Water City and shopped at Harbour Town.  There were a few factory outlets here.

Very late lunch (around 3pm) at Le Cirque.

And the biggest highlight of all was our reunion with one of our friends from the Philippines, Dith.  The Husband and I were so delighted to be able to spend time with her, catch up and reminisce of the good old days.

We found some Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream at Le Cirque so we bought a three mini-tubs and had them for late night dessert.

Took the tram and found ourselves at Carlton Gardens.  The weather in Melbourne is still very much Winter even if it’s already Spring.  It was still cold.  We found the Melbourne Museum nearby and saw their featured exhibition: Titanic.  We tried to get in but tickets were gone for the day.

The Tim Burton Exhibition, an exhibit of his artworks, poems and movies.  It was a lovely exhibition that we enjoyed immensely.  After this, we went to the DFO South Wharf and shopped for a bit.

Breakfast on our last day was at Aix Cafe Creperie Salon, thought to be the place that serve the best crepe in Melbourne.

Met up with Lui and had brunch at the European Restaurant.  Their brunch is from 12:00-4:00pm.  Cozy lovely place, good food.
