Cherished Memories

Last year, the Husband surprised with an iPhone 4s. Last Friday, he surprised me with a MacBook Air!

It was just a matter of time until I get a new laptop, I just didn’t know when. I’ve always been a Windows user and have been happy being one. I’m just a simple girl really when it comes to computers. There’s a non-techie part of me that will always be terrified at learning new technology. The Husband has been encouraging me to switch to an Apple laptop but I’ve always hesitated.

This year, I gave my netbook to my dad so for the past few months, I’ve been writing and doing photography tasks using a desktop computer and an iPad. However, this year, it’s been quite a challenge doing tasks via our desktop because we’ve been using it to watch TFC Online (we’ve subscribed so we can watch Filipino shows and news). So I had to think about getting a new laptop again so I can catch up on my blogging and other digital projects I’ve been conceptualising for the past months. Along with the thinking, I’ve been saving up money in case I do decide to buy one. Lately, the road seemed to have led me to buy a MacBook Air as it answers to a lot of my needs.

Last Friday, we head down to the city and went to the Apple Store. I’ve decided to get the MacBook Air (MBA) but I was also ready to walk out the Apple Store empty-handed in case my gut feel tells me otherwise. I didn’t know the Husband was brewing something in his mind while I fiddled with the MBA. His instagram below said it all…

So we talked to one of the Apple genuises about purchasing an MBA and willingly accommodated us. He told us that if we decide to buy, we can just go to the counter and they’ll get our purchase ready for check-out. We went to the 2nd level of the store and had a look at accessories and when we’re ready to go, we stopped by the counter and that’s when the Husband started talking to the staff.

He was getting a MacBook Air!!!  And then he told me, “This is your Christmas gift!” I was shocked, surprised, overwhelmed and elated when I heard what he said.  Oh wow!!!!  ðŸ™‚ 🙂 🙂

Like a kid, giddy and giggly when I got my MacBook Air.

That evening at home, the Husband gave me a crash course on how to navigate the MBA. Oh ha? Si Husband, benefactor na, trainer pa! LOL.

Right now, I’m still in awe of the Husband’s surprise and in happy disbelief that I’m writing this post using my new writing partner, the MacBook Air

I’ve got lots of foodie adventures that needs to be written (as always) and an article deadline this week so for now, let me share a collage of how we celebrated the birthday of the man behind this blog, Chris, simply called “the Husband”.

There is a pattern as to how we celebrate our birthdays.  It usually includes not going to work (we make a long weekend out of it), delicious food, great company, shopping and travel. This year, we had a quiet celebration in Sydney which started on Friday.

We headed out to Cabramatta, Sydney’s Vietnam-town on Friday morning, had our first taste of Vietnamese coffee (it was wonderful!), explored the streets and shopped at the markets. Before we left, we had lunch at one Pho Viet. In the evening, we brought Chinese food to my aunt’s place and had dinner with relatives.

Went out early on Sunday to have breakfast at IKEA. We bought a few storage solution items because my project this Spring is to make our home more efficient by having organised cabinets.

Monday, his birthday, we went out to hear mass and had lunch at Asadal, a Korean-Japanese restaurant in Parramatta. At home for dinner, I cooked my first ever Pancit Bihon which we enjoyed with Roast Pork.

We ended the day watching the beautiful sunset at home while he blew out a candle and savoured the cupcakes I got him.
I shared this photo on my personal FB page and captioned, “Breakfast and coffee under Cherry Blossom trees with the Love of my Life. I’m so grateful for moments like these it makes my heart tender.”
We’re still officially in Winter season in Sydney but it is in the middle of August when Cherry Blossoms start to bloom. We found out that Auburn Botanic Gardens (corner of Chisholm and Chiswick Roads, Auburn) were holding a Cherry Blossoms Festivals on 18-19 & 25-26 August (two weekends)

I’ve been hinting at the Husband that I want to go on a picnic as soon as the weather becomes warmer and it was great timing that we learned that there were Cherry Blossoms in Auburn. So we woke up early yesterday morning, took the train to Auburn and got on Auburn Council’s free shuttle bus to Auburn Botanic Gardens.

A coffee and ice cream van welcomed visitors at the entrance. Perfect for early birds like us. It was a bit chilly in the west yesterday and it was comforting to have a hot cup of coffee as soon as we got there.

It was a great thing that we were there early. We got ourselves a lovely spot near a line of Cherry Blossom trees. It was the perfect setting to appreciate the beauty of the place and of course, see Cherry Blossoms up close.

The quiet we enjoyed while only a few visitors were present was partnered with a few quick breakfast bites of Empanadas, Cookies and Macaroons.

The Auburn Botanic Gardens was a huge enough space to explore. We went around some of the gardens and enjoyed watching the geese and a peacock on the pond.

It was one of those Sundays where the weather, scenery and company were all perfect.

We’re very happy we discovered this event as we are missing Seoul in Spring where we fell in love with the Cherry Blossoms. There may not be a lot of Cherry Blossom trees in this part of our world, but we still appreciate their beauty just the same.

I’m slowly going back to old photos on my hard drive. I have so much to share and one day I hope I get to put everything on the blog even if it some events happened ages ago (hello, Philippines, Melbourne and Gold Coast vaycays 2011!! LOL). I vow to do that because I’m blogging firstly for me and my family–I want to immortalize everything that makes my everyday memorable thru photography and writing.

For now, I’m focused on publishing the times we spent with my Mom when she vacationed here last Autumn Her travel was a food and shopping experience because that’s all we ever did whenever we go out. The sequence of events are usually like this: we arrive at the place, have a look around, find a place to eat, sit down and have a meal, walk off what we ate by shopping, sit down to rest and eat, walk and shop again, sit down to rest and eat again, do a bit of walking before finally going home. It’s just a cycle.  My Mom and I (and also my Dad) are best buddies when it comes to eating and shopping so it’s always enjoyable to hang out with her.

We spent a whole day in Chatswood because it’s one of the places in Sydney Metro that we both enjoy eating and shopping. It’s been years since she’d been here and it amazed her that the place changed with more food and shopping establishments.

We slept in and arrived for late lunch at Towon Chinese Restaurant (Shop 214, Level 2 of Westfield Shopping Centre, Chatswood). I had the Sweet and Sour Pork Bento while Mom had her favourite Chicken Omelette. Huge servings for deliciously prepared meals with reasonable prices.

We started shopping inside Westfield right after lunch and only stopped for coffee at Oliver Brown Chocolate Cafe (Shop 212, Level 2 of Westfield Shopping Centre, Chatswood). We still felt full from lunch so we only had chocolates.

After coffee, we set out to Chatswood Chase and shops along Victoria Avenue for more shopping. By early evening, we got tired from all the walking so sat down at ZenQ Desserts (Shop 223, Westfield Shopping Centre, Chatswood) for a dessert dinner. Since we were full from lunch and afternoon tea, we decided to bail on real dinner and have dessert instead.  We shared a bowl of Mango Shaved Ice with Mango, Mango Jelly and Ice Cream and this huge Honey Toast.

Honey Toast is made of strips of bread coated in butter and icing sugar, placed creatively inside half a loaf of bread. The bread is perfectly toasted that each bite is crunchy. Our Honey Toast came with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, strawberries and cream. It was sweet, delicious and filling.

We visited Chatswood on a Thursday so we can also explore the Mall Market in Victoria Avenue and Anderson Street. The market consists of food; home & gardening; art & design and clothing & accessories stalls. During the evening, entertainment is also provided by the council.

After our dessert dinner at ZenQ, we had a little food trip at the Mall Market. I finally got to try Mamak, one of Sydney’s best eats. The Husband got me their Roti Canai, crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside. It was sooooo good and comforting, I want to bring it with me to bed (haha). I enjoyed dipping it in curry and spicy sambal sauce.

And because I ate most of the Roti Canai, the Husband and Mom got themselves some Takoyaki from Colotako. If you want an array of sumptuous Takoyaki, get it from Colotako as they are the masters in making Takoyaki.

When we’re all stuffed from all the food we ate at the market we had one final stop–Daiso (inside Mandarin Centre, 65 Albert Avenue Chatswood), where we shopped some more.

The good thing about living in Sydney is that we can celebrate Christmas twice every year. There’s a thing called “Christmas in July” in Australia because our winter season falls from June to August.  The phrase “Christmas in July” is used by establishments in ads and it is quite true. It is during this time that we are all bundled up in thick coats, scarves, gloves and beanies. It is during this time that some areas in Australia experience the falling of snow. We got the whole winter thing going in a different time of the year so it’s a good excuse to celebrate Christmas in July. A part of winter may seem gloomy but the thought of celebrating Christmas in the middle of year brings joy and warmth.

I used to organize Christmas in July parties with friends but this year, the Husband and I were busy with other social events, I actually forgot about it. I only remembered two weeks ago during grocery shopping when a piece of ham caught my eye. I decided there and then to have our own little Christmas in July at home by cooking something festive and sinful for dinner.

Since I always cook ham during New Year’s, and have also baked one when my Mum was here in April, I decided to make a Roast Pork Belly with a siding of chips and carrots.

You know what I love about Christmas in July? We get to celebrate it without having the fuss of gift giving.  It’s Christmas with just the celebration of joy, togetherness, gratitude and of course, good food.

Christmas in July!
