Charmed Life of a Mrs

De-cluttering is a normal occurrence at home.  Every weekend, I sort out stuff that needs to be thrown away.  Every month, I file away documents that needs to be filed.  Every end of season, we sort out clothes that needs to be donated to charity.

For the past three weekends, I’ve been seriously de-cluttering because of two reasons:
(1) I realized that even if I de-clutter on a regular basis, there are some things that still needs to be rid of
(2) Husband and I are going on a vacation and we need to figure out what we’ll bring and make an inventory of what we have so we don’t end up shopping for stuff we don’t need.

The first weekend, we de-cluttered our closet and sorted out clothes, bags and shoes.  The process was physically and emotionally exhausting because it took us the whole day to finish and we let go of clothes that were dear to us.

One of the dress I gave away was the one I wore on our engagement party.  I could have kept it for the sake of being sentimental but I thought the best way was to give it away and maybe make someone else’ life memorable too.

The task resulted to four big bags full of clothes, shoes and bags off to charity.

The following weekend I divided my time and sorted out
(a) my jewellery and accessories
(b) my make-up and beauty products

A few things I learned after I sorted my jewellery and accessories: I have a lot but seldom wear them; I have a lot because most of them were gifts; I should get myself a better and bigger storage box or jewellery box; and I should wear them more often.

I was able to put them in a temporary storage bag but one of the things I will look for when I’m in Manila would be a more user-friendly storage box for them.

I also safe kept the ones I will be bringing with me when we travel.  Every time we travel, I make sure I bring a set of the following: gold jewellery, Pearls, Swarovskis and some fashion accessories, plus my watches.

This task took about four hours to finish because other than sort out, I also cleaned them.

sorting out of jewelleries & accessories

After sorting out my jewellery, I turned to my make-up, cosmetics and perfume lot.  This task was a bit easy because I didn’t have that much make-up anymore.  I only buy make-up once a year now, usually at the start of the year.  One mascara, two foundation, two blush-ons, two sets of eye make-up and a couple of lipsticks and eyeliners–that’s about it really, those are my basic.

Again, after sorting them out, I segregated the ones I will be bringing with me when we travel.  My little beauty area now looks like this….

Last weekend, I saved the best for last and sorted our files.  The files would refer to cards and letters we received, bills and invoices paid, travel paraphernalia and souvenirs.  I was supposed to do this task on Saturday but I actually did this on Friday night.  I stayed up til 1:30am (technically, it was Saturday when I finished) because I needed to distract myself from all the sad news about Japan and the tsunami threat in different countries.  The task of de-cluttering helped a lot in easing the sadness I felt that night, which only shows how much of a de-cluttering queen I am sometimes (take note: sometimes only, not all the time!).  Yes, whenever I feel down & depressed, one of my instincts would be to clean whatever I feel like cleaning inside the house or sort out anything I can get my hands on.

Anyway, this task was very productive because I was able to finalize all the documents we need to bring with us to Manila and I was able to make an inventory of the travel tickets and bookings we’ve printed out.

de-cluttering of files

Now that we’re done with de-cluttering and sorting out stuff, Husband and I are now focused on getting ready for our trip.

Every year, every birthday, I somehow have a theme for my year.  Thinking of how my 2011 will look like, it seems that this year is all about making dreams come true.  Whether it be a big goal or a small endeavour, I’m hoping that this year will be about making some of my dreams come true.

For more than a year, I’ve been lusting over, Adriano Zumbo’s cakes and macarons.  I’ve been planning and imagining how I’ll go to his cafe in Rozelle or his patisserie in Balmain, but my plans never materialized.

Adriano Zumbo is no ordinary patissier. His creations elicit admiration from critics and the public alike and for good reason; they’re unique in concept and execution – quite simply, you won’t find anything else quite like it in Australia.

Inspired by the world around him, his desserts tell a story or take on the personality of their namesakes. Whether it’s Lukas Rides the Tube or Escape From a Columbian Rainforest; Adriano’s fertile mind, exceptional skill and natural curiosity for unlikely ingredients are his biggest assets.{source}

On my birthday, a simple dream came true (that’s a good sign, don’t you think?).  I wanted to spend my day in Manly Beach and it so happened that Adriano Zumbo opened a new patisserie branch there.  Luck was on my side.

Adriano Zumbo Patissier

The patisserie is small and inconspicuous but even from afar, we already smelled the aroma of freshly-baked pastries.  The Husband said, “We are definitely here.”

We bought two small cakes from Adriano Zumbo’s Summer Collection 2011, one for me and one for the Husband.

Cakes from Adriano Zumbo

The cake I chose to be eaten on my birthday was called Gary’s Mangoes.  I chose it because it’s a fruity cake and I love mangoes, very summer-y.

It is made of Macadamia flourless biscuit base, burnt vanilla Brulee, vanilla pepper meringue, macadamia cremeux, mango jelly and a mango mousse.  Sounds yum and tasted very yum hehe.

The fusion of sweet and a bit of tangy, plus the real chunks of mangoes.  It was deliciously creative.  I loved it!

The Husband’s choice was of course, something chocolate-y.  The cake he chose was Wheely Carry Me Mel.

An ensemble of Hazlenut dacquoise with caramel mascarpone mousse, caramel maison, salted chocolate plates and caramel cream. This cake is rounded off with dark chocolate and rolled in chewy caramel

It was supposed to look like this (photo below taken from Adriano Zumbo’s website) but since we took this cake home and it was a very hot day on my birthday, the insides melted and looked liked that (photo above).

But it still tasted great!  The inside of the cake looked like this.  Very rich but does not overwhelm.  The best part for me was the chewy caramel because it wasn’t too sweet.

Macarons in different flavors:
Clockwise: Marshmallow (pink), Chocolate (brown), Apricot & Rosemary (green), Vanilla (beige), Bloody Mary (red).
Macarons from Adriano Zumbo

The Chocolate and Vanilla flavours are a must whenever we buy macarons because it’s our favorites.  The other three flavours we chose them because we wanted to try Adriano’s more “exotic” macarons.  I loved the Marshmallow and Bloody Mary but the Apricot and Rosemary seemed too strong for me.  They captured the two flavours well (Rosemary and Apricot) but I probably didn’t like the combination.

Adriano’s macarons are the best macarons I’ve ever tasted.  It had the right crunch when you bite it but it’s soft and fluffy on the inside.  The sensation of each macaron suddenly explodes inside your mouth.  Such a lovely gastronomic experience.

Next time, we will buy more macarons and I will take better photos hehe!

If you are ever in Sydney and you want to indulge in the best pastries, I highly recommend you visit an Adriano Zumbo Patisserie.

We annually celebrate International Women’s Day at work but it’s only this year that I got to take photographs.  I want to share with you how I celebrate International Women’s Day every year–with my workmates.  What we do is invite the whole office to morning tea and raise funds.  Yes, a fund-raising morning tea in celebration of International Women’s Day!

Yesterday’s celebration was more special than last year because a lot of our workmates put their hand up to bake pastries.  One of our workmates even made a fondant cake with the International Women’s Day logo drawn on top to represent the women we are honouring.

Very clever, isn’t it?  Tasted delicious too!  Sorry, wrong angle of the cake…I should’ve taken the photo on the other side of the room.

The proceeds of our donation will go to the Oxfam Unwrapped.  In the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, we support the Nana Kundi Crisis Centre which offers counselling services, legal support and a safe refuge for women experiencing domestic violence.  Violence and sexual assault are all too common in Papua New Guinea, with 70% of women experience domestic violence.  With our gift, we hope it’ll help protect and educate women about their rights and put an end to violent attitudes and behaviour towards girls and women.

How did you celebrate International Women’s Day?

After work on Friday, the Husband and I had our usual coffee date and for once, he was early.  He was there already and a package on the table was waiting for me.  It was my belated birthday gift!

Meet my new baby….the Panasonic Lumix GF1!

I’ve been very vocal for a long time now that I hope my next camera would be a downgrade from a DSLR.  For almost more than a year I’ve been wanting a camera that is more handy than an SLR but possible to interchange lenses.  Also, I want a camera that can produce sharp images, food, macro and night shots decently.  I want to give my DSLRs a rest from shooting too; only to be used for covering events and not for everyday use.  As for the interchangeable lenses, we want a camera that can accommodate our Canon lenses when attached via a converter.

With my said requirements, the Husband and I studied the specs and features of a few Micro Four Thirds Cameras.  Our top three options were: (1) Panasonic Lumix GF1; (2) Sony NEX 3 or 5 and (3) Olympus Pen E-P1.

It took us awhile to finally decide on the one we thought was best for us.  While I believe that Olympus cameras are good, the Olympus Pen did not impressed me as I thought the colour quality it produced were bland so that was out.  As for the Sony NEX, it took me some time to really figure out if it’s a wise choice.  I used to be a Sony girl.  I’ve used Sony digicams since 2003 and noticed that their cameras produced good quality photos for the first two years and then slowly goes downhill from then.  Even their camera’s flash quality deteriorates after two years.  It took me three digicams from Sony to figure that out.  So I told myself, it’s time to try something new.

Then I finally decided, “Yes, the Lumix GF1 it is!”  What convinced me to choose this one was the lens.  The same manufacturer of Leica DG lens also makes the Lumix G lenses which is the lens used for the Lumix GF1.  I also based my decision on the shots taken by this camera and it was so good, I was blown away.

Panasonic Lumix GF1

We decided all of this last year but we waited for the price to drop.  We knew that early this year, the Lumix GF2 will come out and possibly the GF1 price will be cheaper.  September last year, our “suking” camera store tried to sell the GF1 to us at AUD$920.00 but I declined.  It was a good deal then being that the original price was around AUD$1,100.00-1,200.00.  Husband planned to give this to me as a Christmas and birthday gift but I told him, it would be wise to wait it out.  True enough, the GF2 came out and the GF1 price dropped down.

Why didn’t we buy the Lumix GF2 instead ?  Because we didn’t like its features.  And we don’t buy a camera just because it is the latest model.  We choose cameras based on our needs and what it can deliver.

The Husband initially ordered online but it was taking too long to be delivered so he canceled and went to our suking camera store instead.  Asked the manager there if they can find the Lumix GF1 for him (it is bound to ran out as they are not ordering it anymore).  The manager rang up other branches of their store and found one in Bondi.  The Husband asked it to be delivered to the Sydney branch ASAP and voila, Friday afternoon he picked them up and surprised me at Starbucks with my belated birthday gift!

I’m very very very (can’t say enough, aye?) happy with my new camera.  I’m still learning how to use it but so far, I brought it yesterday at a baby shower event and used it along with my Canon DSLR and I’m very satisfied with it.  I’ve been gushing about it since Friday night and I’m going to say it again here, “This is one of my best camera/photography/blogging” decisions ever.”

Here are a few shots by the Lumix GF1:

It creates great bokeh.  Lens used was the Lumix G 20mm, f1.7

I can’t wait to use it for travel, food blogging, night shots and even during coverage of events.  My dream of owning a more handy camera finally came true!

I’m sorry for the absence of posts.  I’ve been really busy with so many things these days.  I try my best to update this blog all the time but whenever I get home from work, I feel exhausted sometimes.  Anyway, even if my entries are always late, I will always share my discoveries with you sooner or later.  Thank you dear readers for your loyalty.

This was where we had lunch on my birthday (yes, an overdue post…my birthday happened in January).

For my birthday, I wanted something familiar so we had Yum Cha at the Manly Phoenix.  Plus, we love Yum Cha!
We haven’t been to Manly in a long time and it’s only in this visit that we learned about the restaurants situated in Manly Wharf.  When we arrived in the morning, we had a walk thru the wharf and the minute we saw Manly Phoenix, I said, “I want Yum Cha!!!  Other than food, I’ve been wanting to eat at this restaurant for ages but never seem to have the chance.  So finally, after hanging out at the beach and the markets, we went back to Manly Phoenix for lunch.  We were given a good table and this was our view…

Manly
It was a hot and sunny day and the skies were so blue.  It was as if God was smiling back at me on my birthday.
Our first order was tea.  Eventhough it was hot, I cannot eat Yum Cha without tea.  It is recommended to drink tea during Yum Cha as it aids in digestion.
As soon as were were seated, the rolling food trays paraded infront of us.  The first thing we grabbed were the pork dimsum.

Manly Phoenix
Next came the spring rolls.

Manly Phoenix
Then the pork buns.

Manly Phoenix
We always order fried rice (we’re Filipino a meal won’t be complete without rice) even if we have pork buns.

Manly Phoenix

We partnered the fried rice with two of our favourite Yum Cha treats…Pork Belly with Crispy Skin and

Manly Phoenix

of course my super favourite, Roast Duck.

Manly Phoenix

It was one of the most delicious feast I’ve ever had.  Manly Phoenix’s Yum Cha was the best I’ve ever tried.  All the dishes were served fresh and of good quality.  The Pork Dimsum were juicy.  The Pork Buns were soft and meaty.  The spring rolls and fried rice bountiful.  The Pork Belly succulent and the skin was very crispy.  The Roast Duck was the best I’ve tasted.  It was tender and the skin crispy plus it wasn’t oily at all.  The sauce enhanced the flavour of the duck.  I thought I have tasted the best roast duck in another Chinese restaurant but this one changed everything I believed in what a roast duck should taste.

Manly Phoenix

The best part was they let me blew my cake!  The staff were very friendly and gracious with our requests.
