Blog Life

In less than two months, my iPad 2 will turn a year old and honestly, the only protection it’s ever had are the plastic screen protection, clear case (for the back), smart cover and an oversized laptop sleeve which is originally for my netbook.

For the longest time, I’d stare at iPad cases in every gadget store, hoping to find the perfect case for me.  And everytime I’d choose one, I’d bring it back to the shelves after a few minutes, unsure and hesitant.  Sometimes, I’d lust over iPad cases from Kate Spade and Marc Jacobs but again, I can’t find enough logic in me to buy them.  While I understand that they’re designer cases and pretty, I cannot succumb to shelling out money only for aesthetic reasons.

And then there’s the keyboard.  Anyone who blogs or writes would find it easier if their tablet has a real keyboard.  The Husband had suggested buying me an Apple keyboard before we went to Seoul last year but I shunned the idea because I didn’t want an additional gadget to think of when I travel.  I’ve read a story about a blogger who owns an iPad and a separate keyboard which resulted to the blogger forgetting the keyboard at her hotel.  I wouldn’t want that hassle on me.

Late last year, I thought I found the perfect iPad case for me which is an iPad case and keyboard in one.  I didn’t buy it because I thought it wasn’t urgent anyway.  I recommended the iPad Keyboard Case to one of my workmates because he said he wanted to use his iPad while attending classes in university.  He bought one and found it really useful.  Instead of writing down notes, he types his notes during classes on his iPad.

With plans of being more active in writing this year, I’ve decided to buy the iPad Keyboard Case soon. It didn’t occur to me that the Husband had the same idea.  Yesterday, he once again made a gesture of thoughtfulness and generosity as he handed a post-birthday present.

Ipad Keyboard Case

If it were me, I’d probably grab any keyboard case I could find but the Husband did a bit of research and tested the ones available in store.  He ended up choosing the Kensington KeyFolio Pro 2 Removable Keyboard because of its:
  • Tactile keyboard with high-performance keys optimized for touch typist (He didn’t like the quality of rubberized keyboards, he knew I wanted something that feels like a computer keyboard)
Ipad Keyboard Case
  • Removable Bluetooth keyboard delivers wireless operation (If I know that a keyboard isn’t critical to using it while I’m out, I can leave the keyboard at home)
Keyboard Case For My Tablet
  • Secured Velcro fastener ensures tablet vertical stability
  • View angle range from 70 to 20 degrees
Keyboard Case For My Tablet
  • Compact and functional 3-in-1 design
  • Folds flat and secures with elastic band for in case use
  • Easy port access to all iPad 2 controls and 30-pin connector
  • Cut outs for I/O ports, speakers, front and back cameras
Also, it’s much cheaper than other known brands in the market.  Just a tip, make sure that the tablet case you will buy is the right one for your tablet model.  In my case, the Husband had to double check whether he was buying a case for an iPad 2 because it had specified cut outs for the front and back cameras.

I’m now happily typing away when I use my tablet for blogging and writing articles.

My favourite flower

Five years ago, I started blogging via my Multiply site and then a year after, a few months after I got married, I officially created “A Wife’s Charmed Life” (AWCL).  Since then, it has been a great ride of sharing experiences, thoughts, gastronomical and travel adventures through writing and photographs, meeting friends and somehow creating a community of bloggers who share the same interests as mine.

Last year, this blog has gifted me with the opportunity to be a part of a Filipino newspaper here in Sydney called “Ang Kalatas“.  From my little world in the blogosphere, I also now share my life experiences through my column “Life Down Under“.

It has been truly a wonderful journey of writing and sharing photographs that I’m still enjoying enormously and I will continue doing so no matter how busier my life gets.

I’m grateful
…for every story you share back with me
…for every comment, question and email you sent my way
…for the “likes” in FB and retweets in twitter
…for the links back to my blog entries
…for every appreciation you’ve let me known
…for recommendations, tips and leads so I can share it via my blog
…for spending time in my little home in the blogosphere.

If you have passed by AWCL, thank you very much!  And if my story and photographs have made you smiled, made you feel good or let you learned anything, the honour and pleasure has always been mine.

Cheers to more years of writing and sharing!

I’m slowly easing myself into work as I’ve finally came back last week.  I was a bit overwhelmed when I got back because everyone were so happy and relieved to see me, plus the fact that my presence at work is badly needed already (we are launching a “new” training program in July).  I was warmly welcomed with big and long hugs by everyone and some of our external trainers (whom I have become friends with throughout the years) even called me just to say hello.  I’m truly, truly touched.

Welcome Note on My Desk (18 May 2011)

One of my workmate-friends, even emphasized, “Welcome back HOME“.  This was due to the fact that I told them that I’m still a bit homesick.  Another one said, “But this is your home.”  That is true.  Sydney is home.  Manila is home, too.  I take pride in having two homes and I never take that for granted.  Which is probably why at this time, I let myself miss Manila a bit more even if it meant hurting a bit.

Anyway, with each day that I’m feeling better (due to flu that I got when I was in Manila), I’m gradually increasing my appetite for work.  Slowly, I go back to “my normal”.

Speaking of Home, I would like to thank everyone who visits my little home here in the blogosphere, “A Wife’s Charmed Life“.  I’ve been “quite absent” in the blogosphere lately, I’m even tweetless in twitter.  Since I’m still trying to get myself 100% healthy, I avoid doing numerous tasks at the moment and that includes blogging while doing chores at home.

I have so many things to write about, it’s so overwhelming.  We captured thousands of photographs and been to a couple of great places.  I would like to write about them soon.  But where do I start?  How do I begin?  Where the hell did my mojo for writing go????  I am asking myself these questions for the past week because I want to start blogging again. My mojo for writing is out there somewhere and I’m faithfully waiting for it to come back while I get 100% well.  But I hope it comes back soon.

In the meantime, I’ve started replying to emails and will continue doing so in the coming days.

I have received several requests for an exchange of links and I plan to get on to it soon.  If you have linked me up in your site, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  Let me know where you’ve linked me up and give me the link to your blog and I will add you to my Love Links page.  I don’t mind being linked up and I don’t mind giving the favor back to you.  You can let me know by leaving a comment on this blog post OR by leaving a comment in the Love Links page of this blog.

Thank you for your time.  I wish you a week full of abundant blessings!

I’m slowly going back thru all our photos from our vacation.  It’s taking awhile to blog and share them as I arrived in Sydney with a nasty flu which doesn’t want to go away (probably due to fatigue as well).  Anyway, I’m feeling much better this week and I’m looking forward to going back to work tomorrow.

One of the things that I looked forward to when we went to Manila was to meet some of my blogger friends.  The online world is such an amazing place.  I’ve met so many wonderful people thru blogging, plurking and tweeting.

I would have loved to meet all my online buddies but with a hectic schedule, I’m thankful that I got to meet a few of them.

Xingkit was my first meetup.  We met in plurk and then when our ka-plurks moved to twitter, we continued our chitchats there.  Thru our exchanges, we found out that we used to be a part of the same yahoo community (Weddings@Work).  We’re not sure if we had an encounter there but we are happy we met somewhere in the blogosphere.  She blogs about her mommy adventures and the funny little milestones of her cute daughter (whom I’ve met too!).

Meetups with Blogger Friends

I don’t know whether it’s the longevity of being tweethearts but the moment we saw each other, it was as if we’ve been friends for a long time (ang daldal namin haha).  She’s so friendly that even my mom liked her!

Meetups with Blogger Friends

We had lunch at Sbarro and we both love their Baked Zitti.  We found out that we are somehow neighbors (her place is like 10 minutes away from where I live in the Phils).  It’s a comfort that when I visit the Phils the next time, it will be easy for us to see each other again.

Meetups with Blogger Friends

Meeting Jane and Julie was like meeting old friends.  The minute they arrived at UCC Cafe (Podium) for afternoon tea, we hugged!  Like Xingkit, I met them via plurk in 2007 and from then on, we have plurked, tweeted and visited each others’ blogs.

Meetups with Blogger Friends

When it comes to blogging, Jane and Julie are two of my idols.  I’m truly amazed at how dedicated they are when it comes to blogging.  Jane blogs about her journey as a yogini, personal thoughts and what’s hot and new in the Philippines.  Julie blogs about her personal thoughts, interests, passion in special education and homeschooling.  She’s also a photography enthusiast like me.

Meetups with Blogger Friends

When bloggers get together, we can’t help but bring out the thing(s) that make our existence in the blogosphere possible.  Here’s me and Jane, tweeting while chatting.

Jane and Julie introduced me to this delicious dessert at UCC Cafe.  I forgot the name but it had apples, apple syrup and cinnamon.  I loved it!

Special thanks to Julie for giving me a pearl bracelet.  Really sweet and thoughtful of her.  I now consider this a friendship bracelet.

I met K when she visited Sydney a year ago and hit it off so when she learned that I will be visiting Manila, she invited me to have lunch and catch up.  We’ve been tweetmates since last year thanks to our common friend, Lena.

It was lovely to see her again.  I hope she visits Sydney again soon!  Like me, she loves to travel and has a passion for photography.

Meetups with Blogger Friends

We had lunch at Bizu Patisserie and I had this yummy pasta with Chorizo.

Meetups with Blogger Friends

Two meet-ups in one day.  After our lunch with K, dinner was spent with three more blogmates/tweethearts: Tintin, Bea and Twistedsavant.  Our dinner was one of the funnest dinner I’ve had with friends.  I don’t know if it’s because we’ve been tweetmates for awhile but even if we’ve come from different worlds, we just hit it off like we’ve been “barkadas” for a long time.  No awkward moments, just fun and laughter all throughout the night.

We had dinner at Kanin Club and enjoyed the sumptuous dishes we ordered.  My favourite that night was the Seafood Kare-Kare.

The sweetest thing was being given this Banoffee Pie from Banapple.  My heart melted when I saw what was written on the cake (awww).  I knew I wouldn’t have time to dine at Banapple but thanks to Bea and Tintin, they made it possible for me (and my family) to enjoy this super delicious cake.

Dyanie is another sweet soul I met via plurk.  She blogs about her travel and food adventures.  We met for early lunch at Bonchon so my Husband and I can have a taste of this famous South Korean-based fried chicken franchise restaurant.  Dyanie is like a younger sister to me.  Even if she’s offline, she keeps in touch by sending me text messages.

Bonchon Chicken is delicious, however, it is not as juicy as other fried chickens that I’ve tried.

Dyanie gifted me with a Red Velvet Cake from UCC, which my Husband and I enjoyed for dessert after our hearty lunch.

Kenny is another longtime blogmate.  It is a wonder how thru our blogs, we got to know and inspire each other.  I love how she writes her thoughts, milestones and mommy anecdotes.  I admire her passion for collecting the most number of Starbucks Citymug that’s why a few days before I left for Manila, I asked her what citymug from Australia she’d like to own.

Meetups with Blogger Friends

However, she surprised me by giving me two mini Starbucks citymugs too!  Kenny is a joy to be with.  She has a bubbly personality and her stories are funny and entertaining.

And another surprise was that she wrote about our meetup here.  Awww, so sweet!

I always tell my family how blessed I am when it comes to finding friends online.  Other than sharing a love for the blogosphere, I meet people who are genuine and inspiring.

After my holiday in the Philippines, I’m more in awe of our Filipino bloggers.  Given that the internet speed in the Phils is not as fast as other countries, I admire the patience and dedication of Filipino bloggers who blog and share their life and knowledge online.  Now more than ever, I’m thankful to all my Filipino readers.  Maraming maraming salamat!  Saludo ako sa mga Filipino bloggers!

It took me a long while to be an owner of a tablet.  When Apple launched the 1st generation iPad last year, I mentioned that it’s one gadget that I would really want to have.  I planned to buy one then but the Husband suggested that I wait for the 2nd generation to come out.  While the 1st generation is a great product already, I wasn’t quite satisfied with it and decided to wait for a better version.

Over time, I also contemplated on whether I should buy a tablet or not; on whether I need it in my life or not.  I remember a plurk buddy who asked if buying an iPad is beneficial.  And I said, “It depends on what you need it for.”

Believe it or not, I’ve always been hesitant in owning gadgets such as smart phones and tablets because that would mean I will have access to the internet all the time.  While I don’t find anything wrong with that, I don’t like that I’m online all the time.  I know it’s ironic especially that I have a blog and I tweet.  When I meet people who read my blog, they have an impression that I’m always online, which is untrue.  I have days in a week when I don’t open my computer and stay away from twitter because (1) I’m busy with other things and (2) I give myself rest from online activities because I’m on the computer all day at work.

I have long since accepted that the internet is part of everyone’s lifestyle nowadays.  I know that it makes life easier and this year I told myself to just embrace it and stop fighting it from becoming a part of mine.  With the demands of having an online blog and a column for a newspaper, I realized it’s reasonable for me to invest in a gadget that will help me in fulfilling these duties.

After Apple launched the iPad, out came other tablets from Samsung, Motorola, HP, Android, HTC, etc.  The Samsung Galaxy Tab seemed handy and user-friendly, it was my 2nd option for a tablet but found it slow.

Late last year, we learned that Apple will launch a 2nd generation iPad so we waited.  I hoped for a lighter and faster iPad with a camera so I can Facetime with loved ones.  Later on, Apple announced that it will be on sale in Australia on 25 March 2011.

It was bad timing for us because we are leaving for a vacation the following week.  The Husband and I contemplated on whether we should buy one before or after our vaycay.  We knew that iPad 2s will ran out of stock the day after it gets launched (it happened with the iPad).  A last minute decision occurred a few days before the launch and the Husband volunteered to dodge work and wait on queue at the Apple Store.

There were other options of course.  The Husband called Big W and was told that they are selling iPad 2s as well.  We knew that Dick Smith and JB Hi-Fi will be selling too.  But for once in his life, he wanted to experience lining up for an Apple product.

On Friday, 25 March 2011, the Husband lined up for an iPad 2 at 12:00 noon.  The queue was already long.  Based on his calculations, it seemed he was between 200-250 people on queue.  I called him every hour and asked questions such as, “Are you safe there?”; “Are you okay?”;  “Are the people lining up with you nice?”.  I was worried that there would be a riot or something.

I would have taken a half day at work so I can be with him but there were still so many things to do so I just left the office early.  At 4:00pm, I arrived at the Apple Store and a big black cloth covered the ground floor area.  The Apple team were already setting up the place, getting ready for the 5:00pm launch.

The queue had to be moved to the other side of the street.  This was Husband’s line.

According to the Husband, even if the wait was too long, the Apple store made the experience enjoyable.  The Apple store gave water to everyone and lent their umbrellas to those exposed to the sun or rain (it rained in the afternoon).  Krispy Kreme gave out doughnuts and Kit Kat gave away chocolates. For Husband’s dinner, I brought burger and chips.

The Apple staff also talked to the people on queue, asking how they are and if they already know what they will buy.

Lots of security in placed.  There was no pandemonium, everyone just followed the line and got along with each other.

At 4:30pm, the Apple staff all came out and festively ran around the queue (at this time, the queue was up to Market Street), gave people high-fives.  It was very entertaining.

At 4:45pm, they approached everyone on queue and asked what we want.  When you make a decision right there and then, you can’t change your mind anymore.  When you enter the Apple store and suddenly changed your mind, they won’t serve you.  After telling them what we wanted, they handed a white card to us which specified the model we chose and a number code.

iPad 2 Experience

At 6:00pm, I had to leave the Husband because I had my farewell dinner with friends.  I felt very guilty but as I said, the iPad 2 launch was very bad timing.

According to the Husband, he was able to go in the Apple store at 7:30pm.  7 and 1/2 hour wait!  They servee the customers by small batches and once gathered, their orders were presented to them.  After they gave your order to you, they asked if you need help setting it up.  With my Husband, he said, “No, thanks.” to the offer because we already have personal accounts with Apple.

iPad 2

The Husband went to the 2nd floor of the store instead and looked for my choice of Smart Cover.  I didn’t want the Smart Cover (not impressed by it) but the Husband wanted it so I gave in.

At 8:00pm he sent me a  photo and text message that said, “You new iPad 2!”

iPad 2

After my dinner with friends, I met up with him at Starbucks and we went back to the Apple Store.  We assumed it will still be open as the Apple staff told us they will be open til the last customer is served.

There was still a bit of a long line waiting outside Apple Store.

iPad 2 Experience

Since I only saw the box when we met, I was excited to see and touch the iPad 2.  It is thinner and lighter and it is indeed faster than the first iPad.

The white iPad 2 turned out to be the bestseller and became the first models to ran out of stock.  Almost everyone wanted the white iPad 2.

They served the last customer till about 10:30pm.

The Husband and I felt very happy with our iPad 2 experience (even if I only experienced a fraction of it).  He said it’s nice that he got to experience lining up for an Apple product once in his life.  I said I’m glad that other than being a fun experience, it was also a safe one.

So now, we are both enjoying having an iPad 2.  The wait was worth it.
