Aussie Life

On our last day in Melbourne, we decided to have breakfast on the other side of Flinders Lane.  Centre Place is another busy little lane in Melbourne.  Like Degraves Street, it is a laneway full of cafes and restaurants.  As usual, we arrived at the area with no idea on where we were going to eat.  We passed by all the restaurants in Centre Place twice before we decided to eat at Aix Cafe Creperie Salon

The cafe is diminutive.  They have tables just big enough to fit a plate.  It’s so cute!

Here’s the Husband sitting at our table so you can imagine how compact it is!

I like this painting above us.

The painting up close; a man and woman having a meal on a laneway–a typical scene when you live in Melbourne.  I was a bit nostalgic while looking at this painting.  Since it’s the last day of our short getaway, I was feeling the pangs of “Melbourne homesickness”.

We had an exhibition to go to in the morning and a brunch date with our friends so we choose something quick and not so heavy to eat.  The Husband chose the BLT Baguette which seemed massive but since they cut it into half, it was less intimidating.  And before I knew it, the Husband finished it off easily.  When it comes to BLT’s of any sort, we love them.  Who wouldn’t love bacon???

Now comes the best part.  Their crepes are to die for!!!  You know the feeling when you unexpectedly found something you really really like?  That was how I felt when I tasted the crepe I ordered that morning.  My Hot Salami, Goat’s Cheese, Tomato, Capsicum and Olive Tapenade Crepe. Yes, all of those in one crepe!

Aix Cafe Creperie Salon (Melbourne, Australia)

The spiciness of salami and creaminess of goat’s cheese went well together inside the mouth, with the tomato and olive tapenade bringing more flavour to the whole ensemble.  It was a delicious partner to my Cafe Americano.

I noticed their use of pretty souvenir teaspoons which made eating here more distinct.

If there was one cafe I would eat again in our next visit, this would be it.

We celebrated my Husband’s birthday early as we planned to explore exhibitions and do some shopping that day.  Our first stop was breakfast at Degraves Street.  We’ve dined at a few restaurants in this laneway before but we wanted a new place to try out this time.  May not be a good decision especially on a special occasion but I’m glad choosing Cafe Andiamo turned out to be a good dining experience.

There seemed to be a fast turnover of customers when we arrived in the small but cozy cafe.  I observed a mixture of people dropping by for a quick breakfast before going to work and travelers like us who have more time on our hands to savour our fresh cup of coffee.

For a long day ahead, I started with a cup of Cafe Americano.

My Eggs Benedict!  Two halves of an English muffin, topped with ham, poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce.  Eggs were perfectly poached and the sauce not too creamy.  I love that they served their Eggs Benedict with vegetables for that extra healthy factor.

I wouldn’t mind going back here to have a taste of their Eggs Benedict again.

Cafe Andiamo also serves Italian pizza, pasta and risotto dishes for lunch and dinner.

We were given gift certificates to use at Oriental Spa six months ago for a photography gig we did for a friend.  Since we had 3 days off from work this weekend (today being a public holiday in celebration of Labour Day in NSW), we booked an appointment for our Aromatherapy Massage on Saturday.

Oriental Spa is located in Chatswood, a suburb in the north shore of Sydney.  I’ve been here a few times but only to have lunch or shop but have never really explored the place.  There’s a certain homey-and-cool vibe about Chatswood.  They have quite a busy CBD for a Saturday morning with lots of cafes and shops bustling with people.

Good thing we booked our appointment with Oriental Spa early as the moment we stepped out of Chatswood train station, we found out that there’s a lot of things we can do while we’re here.

But first, we had to be in Zen mode at Oriental Spa.  I missed having spas, it’s been ages since I’ve had a massage.

The statue of Quan Yin can be seen as soon you enter the lobby of Oriental Spa.  She is the goddess of compassion, mercy and healing.

We had the Aromatherapy Massage.  For one hour, our body were treated with long stroke massage techniques combined with aromatherapy oils.  It was soothing and relaxing to the body.  We totally enjoyed it.

After our massage, we went straight to Westfield Chatswood and had lunch at Soban The Grill.

Soban

Soban The Grill is a Korean restaurant that specializes in skewers and fresh-from-the-grill dishes.  There’s another Soban restaurant in Level 6 of Westfield Chatswood that serve traditional Korean dishes.

They served garlic bread while we waited for our food.

The Husband’s Pork Skewers with rice, green salad and mashed potatoes.  Mild barbeque flavor of the pork, not as tasty as it looked.  But their mashed potato tasted great.  We wanted more of it.

My Chicken Cordon Bleu with rice and green salad.  Chicken was crispy outside but tender inside.  I loved that they used asparagus and sundried tomato as fillings for the chicken.

The next time we visit, maybe we’ll try the other Soban on Level 6.

Too full from lunch, we went around Westfield for a bit then moved on to Chatswood Chase (the other mall a few blocks away) and checked out the Apple Store there.

Before we went home, we had dessert at Hello Happy, a Korean cafe and bakeshop.  We got intrigued by the name of the cafe (it sounded very positive!) and we wanted to try an authentic Korean cake.

It was delicious.  It’s the kind of cake that I want: light, not too sweet and the icing not too overwhelming.

We decided to buy a Mocha Roll to bring to a party we attended that night.  The guests loved it too!

Saturday was such a great day and exploring a new suburb is so much fun.  Because of this experience, we plan of going to suburbs that will catch our fancy once in a while.

Australian Centre for the Moving Image presents “Tim Burton: The Exhibition”, an outstanding international exhibition in Australia under the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces banner.
Tim Burton The Exhibition (Melbourne, Australia)

Until October 2010, ACMI hosts a unique exhibition direct from The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.  An Australian exclusive, Tim Burton: The Exhibition is a landmark exhibition charting Tim Burton’s creative vision and process from his earliest work to the spectacular Alice in Wonderland. {source}

The exhibition is currently being held at Federation Square, Melbourne.  Open daily from 10am-6pm with special late night viewing on Thursdays until 10pm

Outside Federation Square…

Near the entrance (inside Federation Square), you’ll see the Bat Mobile from the movie “Batman”.

Tim Burton The Exhibition (Melbourne, Australia)

There are no taking of photographs inside the exhibition venue, the staff are very strict and roam around to make sure that no one is taking photographs.

The exhibition was fascinating.  I learned so many things about Tim Burton and his work, plus I got to somehow see his “human side” as they showed some of his letters written to friends and people he’s worked with.  For example, I saw a letter he wrote to Johnny Depp asking if a certain dialogue for “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory” is appropriate enough to be added to the movie’s script.

Tim Burton The Exhibition (Melbourne, Australia)

Tim Burton is a gifted artist.  He draws, paints, photographs.  He is a story teller and a poet.  He is a writer and a director.  His creations are uncanny, unique and creatively captivating.  This exhibition showed how Tim Burton started out in his career, how he develops a story, the story behind the films he’s made and his unpublished works.

Tim Burton The Exhibition (Melbourne, Australia)

He also created maquettes from his film and non-film projects.

One of my favorite films was of his, Edward Scissorhands.  When we entered the exhibition, we heard the magical music from the film and saw the costume of Edward Scissorhands.  I swear, I almost brought out my camera to take a photo of it.  *sigh*  It felt surreal to see it.

Tim Burton The Exhibition (Melbourne, Australia)

His latest film, “Alice in Wonderland” was a fabulous part of the exhibition as we saw the costumes used by the lead characters of the movie.  The three dresses worn by Alice in the movie were all there.  I wanted to feel the fabric of all Alice’s dresses but touching the exhibits weren’t allowed too.  I’m truly fascinated seeing the costumes from his movies.

Tim Burton The Exhibition (Melbourne, Australia)

Each film he made was featured in the exhibition, even the old ones like Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Batman, Batman Returns, Planet of the Apes, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

One of his creations I love the most were his poems: funny, straightforward, easy to read and sometimes poignant.

Viewing and being engrossed with his collection took us more than an hour and a half.  If you were to visit, I suggest you allot at least two hours to truly appreciate his work.   We left at nearly closing time spending about 15 minutes at the ACMI Store (can be found inside Federation Square) where you can buy a range of Burton Merchandise.

My Husband and I bought the the Tim Burton The Exhibition Catalogue (AUD$24.95) and a few pieces of his artworks produced in postcards.

Featuring over 70 pages of informative essays, glorious full-colour images and a chronology of Burton’s career, this publication was the perfect complement to our exhibition experience.

Two months ago, I asked the Husband, “Where do you want to celebrate your birthday?  Beach or city?”  And he answered, “City.”  So I booked a trip to Melbourne as this was one of our favorite cities.  We celebrated my birthday in Melbourne last year so I thought of giving the favor back to the Husband.

We didn’t have any concrete plans when we arrived in Melbourne.  Our friends who lived there asked us what we planned to see or do and we replied, “Nada.”  But even with no plans, we saw a couple of places and exhibitions, discovered gastronomic indulgences and hung out with friends.  It was one of the Husband’s happiest birthday celebration and one of the most memorable getaways we’ve experienced.

I’ve got tons of food and travel experiences to share from our recently concluded Melbourne trip but for now, I’m going to share the highlights of our Spring getaway.

Our first meal on Wednesday was lunch at La Citta,  a cozy Italian restaurant in  Degraves Street.  The Husband and I each had a bowl of pasta and a glass of white to celebrate our arrival in Melbourne.

Lunch at La Citta

For dessert, we walked along Elizabeth Street and found this little store called Spanish Doughnuts.  They sell the most delicious Churros I’ve ever tasted.  Really, their Churros are something to die for.

Churros from Spanish Doughnuts

After lunch and dessert, we went back to our hotel to rest for a while and unpack our stuff.  We arrived with champagne waiting inside our room.  I had to call the front desk to make sure they didn’t make a mistake as we didn’t order anything nor we were VIPs.  But they assured us it was a welcome gift.  How sweet!

Champagne to welcome us in Rendezvous

Re-charged from a short power nap, we went out to meet up with our friend Lui.  Our first ride was the City Circle Tram provided by the city for free.

City Circle Tram

Wednesday evening was spent at Costco.  The first ever Costco in Australia is in Melbourne and we took the chance to see it with Lui.  It was a fun, massive shopping experience.  Almost everything inside that store is big, it was amusing!  We can’t wait for Sydney to open its own Costco store.  We shopped for a couple of items (mostly Hershey’s chocolates) and had dinner in the Costco food court which also serve massive food servings.

Sunset in Melbourne

Thursday morning, we had late coffee at Sensory Lab.  It’s a cafe with a concept of a laboratory–the servers wear labcoats!  And being inside their cafe is like being inside a science laboratory.  We tried their Tanzania brewed by syphon method

It was our first time to try syphoned coffee.  A different gastronomical experience to the normal brewed coffee we usually drink.

Spent most of the day at Water City and Harbour Town Shopping Centre at Docklands.  Water City is like their version of Darling Harbour.   We took lots of photos at Water City and shopped at Harbour Town.  There were a few factory outlets here.

Very late lunch (around 3pm) at Le Cirque.

And the biggest highlight of all was our reunion with one of our friends from the Philippines, Dith.  The Husband and I were so delighted to be able to spend time with her, catch up and reminisce of the good old days.

We found some Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream at Le Cirque so we bought a three mini-tubs and had them for late night dessert.

Took the tram and found ourselves at Carlton Gardens.  The weather in Melbourne is still very much Winter even if it’s already Spring.  It was still cold.  We found the Melbourne Museum nearby and saw their featured exhibition: Titanic.  We tried to get in but tickets were gone for the day.
