The most talked about macarons from a French-based brand, Ladurée, has reached Sydney shores and opened on 12 September at Westfield Sydney.

Ladurée is a well-known luxury cakes and pastries brand based in Paris established in 1862.  They are regarded as the inventor of macarons, a meringue-based confectionery made with egg whites, granulated sugar and almond meal filled with ganache, jam or buttercream. Their other products include cakes, chocolates, tea, books, bags, scented candles, perfume and shower products.

In the Sydney branch, only the macarons, chocolates and tea are available. The macarons are frozen and shipped from Switzerland in order to arrive in Sydney in good condition. A piece of macaron is priced at $3.20 and they come in different flavours such as Chocolate, Vanilla, Cherry Blossom, Pistachio, Strawberry Marshmallow, etc.

With time on my hands, I dropped by Ladurée on Thursday afternoon and waited on queue for 1 hour and 22 minutes (I started at 5:02pm and ended at 6:24pm). Seemed like a long wait but I didn’t mind. At the back of my though, I hoped that the cost of these small macarons were worth it. I waited alone but twitter kept me company and passers-by and patrons who opted to get a table in their small cafe were a fun to watch. Thursday is late night shopping in Sydney so I wasn’t surprised with the crowd.

There were four staff at the take-away counter who cheerfully accommodated every question of customers. They move efficiently quick but since people aren’t familiar with some of the flavours, it took awhile to decide. It would have been better if they had a take-away system during peak hours. Maybe hand out a brochure containing Ladurée products so people can think about what to get while on queue?

Once at the counter, I ordered 12 pieces of macarons, a bar of dark chocolate and a bar of milk chocolate with almonds. Took about a minute to check-out.

The weekend that came, the Husband and I devoured the macarons and they were simply exquisite. The waiting on queue and price to pay for the macarons were all worth it. I’m  a fan of Aussie-made macarons and I have to admit that Ladurée macarons are now a favourite too.

Up next, more Ladurée macaron photos and more gushing about this new macaron favourite of ours.

I received an invite to the Vogue Fashion’s Night Out (VFNO) but I thought that happened last week so I was surprised to arrive at Westfield Sydney’s party ambience last night. Silly me for not getting my head around my social calendar.

In celebration of this one night only affair, almost all the stores in Queen Victoria Building (QVB) and Westfield Sydney ran sales and some special kind of entertainment for Thursday shoppers. At first, I was overwhelmed by so many people but it turned out to be a fun night.

The reason why we dropped by Westfield was to buy our first ever Nespresso machine.  A party was in full swing at the Nespresso Boutique with people enjoying cocktails and Nespresso coffee. I was a bit worried that we wouldn’t be accommodated well by the staff due to many people inside the store but buying last night proved to be a blessing in disguise.

Look at the wall behind the bartenders. It’s Aboriginal art made of Nespresso capsules. How very Aussie and very Nespresso! It looks beautiful.

There was a long queue at the counters as lots of Nespresso members were purchasing Nespresso products but it didn’t take long for us to be serviced. When we got to the counter, our Nespresso purchases where all ready and in a few minutes we were signed up for the Nespresso Club membership.

We got treated to a Nespresso cocktails and chocolate truffles after that.  It was a great way to be welcomed to the Nespresso Club.  I was so kilig! 🙂 After so many years of waiting for the right machine and the right time to finally buy one, I felt that it was fate that brought us to this one night when Nespresso’s having a party at their boutique.

Will share more about our Nespresso machine in a separate entry next week. In the meantime, here are a few more photos from last night.

Legally Blonde (The Musical) which is set to stage in October had a little concert at the QVB. The cast led by Lucy Durack and Rob Mills sang a few songs to the delight of the audience.

Lingerie stores had live mannequins and shoppers were free to take their photos.

While some stores had music DJs, this one fashion store had Brazilian dancers. It was very entertaining.

Here’s a short video of their performance:

What we had for dinner: Pad Thai and Vegetable Spring Rolls to share from Thairiffic.

The much-awaited Ladurée is opening at Westfield Sydney SOON. Can’t wait!

Fabulous window displays. This one at Mulberry was my favourite–Mulberry bags made of gold balloons.

What a great and fun VFNO! Hope Westfield Sydney organises something this again.
Happy first week of Spring! 🙂

Celebrated Father’s Day with relatives yesterday [Australia celebrates Father’s Day every 1st Sunday of September]. We got invited to a delicious lunch of ribs, lasagna and salad at my aunt’s place. Delicious food and fun company.  The Husband and I brought a small Cookies and Cream Sponge cake for dessert.  Spent the rest of the afternoon playing basketball and photographing newly-blossomed flowers in my aunt’s backyard.  Hope you had a lovely weekend too!

I shared this photo on my personal FB page and captioned, “Breakfast and coffee under Cherry Blossom trees with the Love of my Life. I’m so grateful for moments like these it makes my heart tender.”
We’re still officially in Winter season in Sydney but it is in the middle of August when Cherry Blossoms start to bloom. We found out that Auburn Botanic Gardens (corner of Chisholm and Chiswick Roads, Auburn) were holding a Cherry Blossoms Festivals on 18-19 & 25-26 August (two weekends)

I’ve been hinting at the Husband that I want to go on a picnic as soon as the weather becomes warmer and it was great timing that we learned that there were Cherry Blossoms in Auburn. So we woke up early yesterday morning, took the train to Auburn and got on Auburn Council’s free shuttle bus to Auburn Botanic Gardens.

A coffee and ice cream van welcomed visitors at the entrance. Perfect for early birds like us. It was a bit chilly in the west yesterday and it was comforting to have a hot cup of coffee as soon as we got there.

It was a great thing that we were there early. We got ourselves a lovely spot near a line of Cherry Blossom trees. It was the perfect setting to appreciate the beauty of the place and of course, see Cherry Blossoms up close.

The quiet we enjoyed while only a few visitors were present was partnered with a few quick breakfast bites of Empanadas, Cookies and Macaroons.

The Auburn Botanic Gardens was a huge enough space to explore. We went around some of the gardens and enjoyed watching the geese and a peacock on the pond.

It was one of those Sundays where the weather, scenery and company were all perfect.

We’re very happy we discovered this event as we are missing Seoul in Spring where we fell in love with the Cherry Blossoms. There may not be a lot of Cherry Blossom trees in this part of our world, but we still appreciate their beauty just the same.

I’m slowly going back to old photos on my hard drive. I have so much to share and one day I hope I get to put everything on the blog even if it some events happened ages ago (hello, Philippines, Melbourne and Gold Coast vaycays 2011!! LOL). I vow to do that because I’m blogging firstly for me and my family–I want to immortalize everything that makes my everyday memorable thru photography and writing.

For now, I’m focused on publishing the times we spent with my Mom when she vacationed here last Autumn Her travel was a food and shopping experience because that’s all we ever did whenever we go out. The sequence of events are usually like this: we arrive at the place, have a look around, find a place to eat, sit down and have a meal, walk off what we ate by shopping, sit down to rest and eat, walk and shop again, sit down to rest and eat again, do a bit of walking before finally going home. It’s just a cycle.  My Mom and I (and also my Dad) are best buddies when it comes to eating and shopping so it’s always enjoyable to hang out with her.

We spent a whole day in Chatswood because it’s one of the places in Sydney Metro that we both enjoy eating and shopping. It’s been years since she’d been here and it amazed her that the place changed with more food and shopping establishments.

We slept in and arrived for late lunch at Towon Chinese Restaurant (Shop 214, Level 2 of Westfield Shopping Centre, Chatswood). I had the Sweet and Sour Pork Bento while Mom had her favourite Chicken Omelette. Huge servings for deliciously prepared meals with reasonable prices.

We started shopping inside Westfield right after lunch and only stopped for coffee at Oliver Brown Chocolate Cafe (Shop 212, Level 2 of Westfield Shopping Centre, Chatswood). We still felt full from lunch so we only had chocolates.

After coffee, we set out to Chatswood Chase and shops along Victoria Avenue for more shopping. By early evening, we got tired from all the walking so sat down at ZenQ Desserts (Shop 223, Westfield Shopping Centre, Chatswood) for a dessert dinner. Since we were full from lunch and afternoon tea, we decided to bail on real dinner and have dessert instead.  We shared a bowl of Mango Shaved Ice with Mango, Mango Jelly and Ice Cream and this huge Honey Toast.

Honey Toast is made of strips of bread coated in butter and icing sugar, placed creatively inside half a loaf of bread. The bread is perfectly toasted that each bite is crunchy. Our Honey Toast came with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, strawberries and cream. It was sweet, delicious and filling.

We visited Chatswood on a Thursday so we can also explore the Mall Market in Victoria Avenue and Anderson Street. The market consists of food; home & gardening; art & design and clothing & accessories stalls. During the evening, entertainment is also provided by the council.

After our dessert dinner at ZenQ, we had a little food trip at the Mall Market. I finally got to try Mamak, one of Sydney’s best eats. The Husband got me their Roti Canai, crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside. It was sooooo good and comforting, I want to bring it with me to bed (haha). I enjoyed dipping it in curry and spicy sambal sauce.

And because I ate most of the Roti Canai, the Husband and Mom got themselves some Takoyaki from Colotako. If you want an array of sumptuous Takoyaki, get it from Colotako as they are the masters in making Takoyaki.

When we’re all stuffed from all the food we ate at the market we had one final stop–Daiso (inside Mandarin Centre, 65 Albert Avenue Chatswood), where we shopped some more.
